Communication: ab initio simulations of hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics: collective tunneling and the origin of geometrical isotope effects.

Ab initio simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects have been used to examine the order-disorder transition in squaric acid, a prototypical H-bonded antiferroelectric crystal. Our simulations reproduce the >100 K difference in transition temperature observed upon deuteration as well as the strong geometrical isotope effect observed on intermolecular separations within the crystal. We find that collective transfer of protons along the H-bonding chains - facilitated by quantum mechanical tunneling - is critical to the order-disorder transition and the geometrical isotope effect. This sheds light on the origin of isotope effects and the importance of tunneling in squaric acid which likely extends to other H-bonded ferroelectrics.

Edible insects have been proposed as a novel and sustainable source of protein and other essential nutrients for human consumption but nutrient absorption efficiency is still uncertain. We investigated zinc absorption from house crickets (Acheta domesticus) in a single-center and single-blinded cross-over study with children aged 24-36 months old in Kenya from September-November 2021. Alkenyl pheromones are a class of insect sex pheromones that are characterized by the presence of one or more double bonds, which can be either in the E(trans) or Z(cis) configuration. This structural variation is essential in mating, as it influences reproductive behavior and provides a potential method for insect control. As a base for rapid and in-situ screening of synthetic pheromones or pheromone-based products, this study explores the potential of Raman spectroscopy to differentiate between the two geometrical isomers, E(trans) and Z(cis), of the alkenyl pheromones.

Here, we investigated the impact of supplementary feeding of peanuts on the morphology of red squirrels () from five populations in Britain (North Scotland, Borders, Jersey and two temporally distinct populations from Formby (Merseyside)). Stable isotope analysis confirmed dietary ecology in 58 specimens.
