Acquiring the necessary cognitive and psychomotor skills to perform ultrasound guided procedures may require initial training. Growing evidence shows that simulation can help in the acquisition of procedural skills. Commercially available phantoms are expensive, have non-tissue like haptics, are preformed with fixed targets and do not allow for additional targets to be imbedded. In this study we have described several new phantoms and animal models that are inexpensive, easy to assemble and allow a rapid change of targets. Such phantoms can provide an ideal initial learning opportunity in a zero-risk environment.

Readily available animal tissue, such as ground beef, is a convenient material to represent the dielectric properties of biological tissue when validating microwave imaging and sensing hardware and techniques. The reliable use of these materials depends on the accurate characterization of their properties. Set-up errors are a problem for pre-clinical irradiators that lack imaging capabilities. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the potential set-up errors on the dose distribution for a mouse with a xenographic tumour irradiated with a standard Cs-137 cell irradiator equipped with an in-house lead collimator with 10 mm diameter apertures. The EGSnrc Monte-Carlo (MC) code was used to simulate the potential errors caused by displacements of the mouse in the irradiation setup.

A new projector, Orthogonal-Distance Ray-tracer Varying-Full Width at Half Maximum (OD-RT-VF), was developed to model a shift-variant elliptical point-spread function (PSF) response to improve the image quality of a preclinical dual-rotation PET system. Approach: The OD-RT-VF projector models different FWHM values of the PSF in multiple directions, using half-height and half-width tube-of-response (ToR) values.
