Background: The gastrointestinal tract is a rare site for extramedullary involvement in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).

Case Report: A 43-year-old female with no past medical history presented complaining of mild abdominal pain, fever, and chills for the past day. On examination, she was tachycardic and febrile, with mild tenderness of her right lower quadrant and without signs of peritoneal irritation. Laboratory examination revealed pancytopenia and DIC, with a fibrinogen level of 290 mg/dL. CT of the abdomen showed a thickened and hyperemic appendix without perforation or abscess, compatible with acute appendicitis. The patient was given IV broad-spectrum antibiotics and was transfused with packed red blood cells and platelets. She underwent uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy and bone marrow biopsy, which revealed neoplastic cells of 90% of the total bone marrow cellularity. Flow cytometry indicated presence of 92.4% of immature myeloid cells with t (15: 17) and q (22: 12) mutations, and FISH analysis for PML-RARA demonstrated a long-form fusion transcript, positive for APL. Appendix pathology described leukemic infiltration with co-expression of myeloperoxidase and CD68, consistent with myeloid sarcoma of the appendix. The patient completed a course of daunorubicin, cytarabine, and all trans-retinoic acid. Repeat bone marrow biopsy demonstrated complete remission. She will follow up with her primary care physician and hematologist/oncologist.

Conclusions: Myeloid sarcoma of the appendix in the setting of APL is very rare and it might play a role in the development of acute appendicitis. Urgent management, including bone marrow biopsy for definitive diagnosis and urgent surgical intervention, dramatically improve prognosis.

Objective: To evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of eculizumab for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) in China.

Method: Data were retrospectively collected from patients with PNH who received at least 3 months of full-dose eculizumab. Changes in clinical and laboratory indicators after 1, 3, and 6 months of eculizumab therapy and at the end of follow-up were documented.

Nuclear factor I-C regulates intramembranous bone formation via control of FGF signalling.

Our previous studies indicate that NFI-C is essential for tooth root development and endochondral ossification. However, its exact role in calvarial intramembranous bone formation remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that the disruption of the gene leads to defects in intramembranous bone formation, characterized by decreased osteogenic proliferative activity and reduced osteoblast differentiation during postnatal osteogenesis.

Introduction: The severity of spinal cord injury (SCI) is closely tied to pulmonary function, especially in cases of higher SCI levels. Despite this connection, the underlying pathological mechanisms in the lungs post-SCI are not well understood. Previous research has established a connection between disrupted sympathetic regulation and splenocyte apoptosis in high thoracic SCI, leading to pulmonary dysfunction.

Bone marrow aspiration is an essential procedure for diagnosing hematological conditions and therapeutic applications, such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) therapy for non-union of bones. This report presents a case of a 35-year-old male with femoral non-union treated with BMAC, requiring the collection of a large bone marrow aspirate volume. A novel, low-cost modification to the standard bone marrow aspiration apparatus was developed using components from an intravenous (IV) drip set, including a rubber bulb connector and a luer lock connector.

Introduction: Patients with leukemia undergoing bone marrow aspiration (BMA) frequently experience considerable pain and anxiety, which may negatively impact physiological outcomes. Reflexology, a complementary therapeutic approach, has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing pain and anxiety across various medical procedures. This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the impact of foot reflexology on pain, anxiety, and physiological indices in leukemia patients undergoing BMA.
