Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery for benign ovarian cystectomies.

Department of Gynecology, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Published: March 2016

Background: Single-port laparoscopy (LESS) utilizes a single, multichannel port in an attempt to decrease postoperative pain, while enhancing cosmesis and minimizing the potential risks and morbidities associated with the multiple ports used in conventional laparoscopy.

Methods: We performed a retrospective study examining three tertiary care referral centers. From September 2009 until March 2013, 31 patients with ovarian cystic lesions were treated using the LESS technique. A control group of 57 patients who underwent conventional laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy was included for comparison.

Results: All patients underwent a technically successful cystectomy. There were no statistically significant differences in the mean operative time or estimated blood loss between the two groups. Narcotic use during the recovery period was reported in less patients in the LESS group than in the laparoscopic group (p = 0.05).

Conclusions: The LESS technique can be used to safely perform cystectomies on women with benign ovarian cysts. Additional investigation is needed to evaluate the safety, cost-effectiveness and long-term outcomes of this new approach.

Functional evaluation and clinical classification of BRCA2 variants.

Nature

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Germline BRCA2 loss-of function variants, which can be identified through clinical genetic testing, predispose to several cancers. However, variants of uncertain significance limit the clinical utility of test results. Thus, there is a need for functional characterization and clinical classification of all BRCA2 variants to facilitate the clinical management of individuals with these variants.

Malignant Brenner Tumor of the Ovary: A Critical Reappraisal.

Int J Gynecol Pathol

November 2024

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.

Malignant Brenner tumors (MBTs) are rare epithelial tumors of the ovary, most likely arising from benign and borderline Brenner tumors. MBTs may be misdiagnosed as other primary carcinomas or nonepithelial tumors of the ovary as well as metastatic carcinomas. Accurate diagnosis usually requires clinical-radiologic correlation, extensive sampling, and immunohistochemical studies.

Objective To assess the value of the MRI-based ovarian-adnexal reporting and data system (O-RADS MRI) for the diagnosis of adnexal masses. Methods A total of 407 patients who underwent dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE)-MRI and pathological examination (gold standard) at the Department of Radiology,Central Hospital of Wuhan between May 2017 and December 2022 were enrolled in this study. Two radiologists performed the O-RADS MRI scoring of adnexal masses according to MRI features and calculated the malignancy rate of adnexal masses by O-RADS MRI score, enhancement type, and mass type.

Background: The accurate interpretation of the /2 variant is critical for diagnosing and treating hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. ClinVar is a widely used public database for genetic variants. Conflicting classifications of pathogenicity can occur when different submitters categorize the same genetic variant inconsistently as pathogenic (PV), likely pathogenic (LPV), likely benign (LBV), benign (BV), or a variant of uncertain significance (VUS).

Article Synopsis
  • Mucinous ovarian cystadenomas are rare, benign tumors that can grow large and are usually found incidentally during ultrasounds.
  • Two cases are highlighted where these tumors caused abdominal swelling.
  • Complicated cases can mimic serious conditions needing emergency surgery, so early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid complications and cancer development.
