From experimental studies, it is well known that colloidal particles suspended in a near-critical binary solvent exhibit interesting aggregation phenomena, often associated with colloidal phase transitions and assumed to be driven by long-ranged solvent-mediated (SM) interactions (critical Casimir forces), set by the (diverging) correlation length of the solvent. We present the first simulation and theoretical study of an explicit model of a ternary mixture that mimics this situation. Both the effective SM pair interactions and the full ternary phase diagram are determined for Brownian disks suspended in an explicit two-dimensional supercritical binary liquid mixture. Gas-liquid and fluid-solid transitions are observed in a region that extends well away from criticality of the solvent reservoir. We discuss to what extent an effective pair-potential description can account for the phase behavior we observe. Our study provides a fresh perspective on how proximity to the critical point of the solvent reservoir might influence colloidal self-assembly.

Spiking Flip-Flop Memory in Resonant Tunneling Diode Neurons.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

University of Strathclyde, Institute of Photonics, SUPA Dept of Physics, Glasgow, United Kingdom.

We report a spiking flip-flop memory mechanism that allows controllably switching between neural-like excitable spike-firing and quiescent dynamics in a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) neuron under low-amplitude (<150  mV pulses) and high-speed (ns rate) inputs pulses. We also show that the timing of the set-reset input pulses is critical to elicit switching responses between spiking and quiescent regimes in the system. The demonstrated flip-flop spiking memory, in which spiking regimes can be controllably excited, stored, and inhibited in RTD neurons via specific low-amplitude, high-speed signals (delivered at proper time instants) offers high promise for RTD-based spiking neural networks, with the potential to be extended further to optoelectronic implementations where RTD neurons and RTD memory elements are deployed alongside for fast and efficient photonic-electronic neuromorphic computing and artificial intelligence hardware.

Article Synopsis
  • - Critical Casimir forces act on particles in a near-critical fluid, allowing researchers to manipulate particle behavior based on surface properties and small temperature changes.
  • - The study explores how these forces can trap colloidal particles by using specially designed substrates with contrasting surface properties, enabling different levitation effects like sedimentation and point levitation.
  • - By analyzing various parameters, the research indicates that while the conditions for point levitation become limited when moved away from critical points, the trapping force increases, highlighting potential applications in sorting colloids by size and measuring thermodynamic properties.

Condensation of Exciton-Polaritons in a Bound State in the Continuum: Effects of the Excitation Spot Size and Polariton Transport.

ACS Nano

Department of Applied Physics and Science Education and Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute, Eindhoven University of Technology, P.O. Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

We report the formation of polariton condensates from strongly coupled molecules to bound states in the continuum with quadrupolar character in a metasurface of silicon nanoparticles. Our experiments demonstrate a strong dependence of the condensation threshold on the excitation spot size. The condensation threshold decreases as the excitation spot size increases, achieving thresholds below 3 μm cm for spot sizes of around 1 mm and condensate lifetimes exceeding 20 ps.

The Casimir-like effect induced by active nematics.

J Phys Condens Matter

August 2024

Faculty of Physics, Kharazmi University, Tehran 15815-3587, Iran.

We consider an active nematic phase and use hydrodynamical equations of it to model the activity as an internal field. The interaction of this field with the nematic director in a confined geometry is included in the Hamiltonian of the system. Based on this model Hamiltonian and the standard field theoretical approach, the Casimir-like force induced between the boundaries of such a confined film is discussed.

We consider a nearly collisionless plasma consisting of a species of "test particles" in one spatial and one velocity dimension, stirred by an externally imposed stochastic electric field-a kinetic analog of the Kraichnan model of passive advection. The mean effect on the particle distribution function is turbulent diffusion in velocity space-known as stochastic heating. Accompanying this heating is the generation of fine-scale structure in the distribution function, which we characterize with the collisionless (Casimir) invariant C_{2}∝∫∫dxdv〈f^{2}〉-a quantity that here plays the role of (negative) entropy of the distribution function.
