We study the tensor spectral index n(t) and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r in the simplest multifield extension to single-field, slow-roll inflation models. We show that multifield models with potentials V∼[under ∑]iλ_{i}|ϕ_{i}|^{p} have different predictions for n(t)/r than single-field models, even when all the couplings are equal λ_{i}=λ_{j}, due to the probabilistic nature of the fields' initial values. We analyze well-motivated prior probabilities for the λ_{i} and initial conditions to make detailed predictions for the marginalized probability distribution of n(t)/r. With O(100) fields and p>3/4, we find that n(t)/r differs from the single-field result of n(t)/r=-1/8 at the 5σ level. This gives a novel and testable prediction for the simplest multifield inflation models.

Seeding Primordial Black Holes in Multifield Inflation.

Phys Rev Lett

The inflationary origin of primordial black holes (PBHs) relies on a large enhancement of the power spectrum Δ_{ζ} of the curvature fluctuation ζ at wavelengths much shorter than those of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. This is typically achieved in models where ζ evolves without interacting significantly with additional (isocurvature) scalar degrees of freedom. However, quantum gravity inspired models are characterized by moduli spaces with highly curved geometries and a large number of scalar fields that could vigorously interact with ζ (as in the cosmological collider picture).

We study the postinflation dynamics of multifield models involving nonminimal couplings using lattice simulations to capture significant nonlinear effects like backreaction and rescattering. We measure the effective equation of state and typical timescales for the onset of thermalization, which could affect the usual mapping between predictions for primordial perturbation spectra and measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation. For large values of the nonminimal coupling constants, we find efficient particle production that gives rise to nearly instantaneous preheating.

Constraints on Holographic Multifield Inflation and Models Based on the Hamilton-Jacobi Formalism.

Phys Rev Lett

May 2019

Grupo de Cosmología y Astrofísica Teórica, Departamento de Física, FCFM, Universidad de Chile, Blanco Encalada 2008, Santiago, Chile.

In holographic inflation, the 4D cosmological dynamics is postulated to be dual to the renormalization group flow of a 3D Euclidean conformal field theory with marginally relevant operators. The scalar potential of the 4D theory-in which inflation is realized-is highly constrained, with use of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations. In multifield holographic realizations of inflation, fields additional to the inflaton cannot display underdamped oscillations (that is, their wave functions contain no oscillatory phases independent of the momenta).

Primordial Anisotropies in the Gravitational Wave Background from Cosmological Phase Transitions.

Phys Rev Lett

Maryland Center for Fundamental Physics, Department of Physics, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 20742, USA.

Phase transitions in the early Universe can readily create an observable stochastic gravitational wave background. We show that such a background necessarily contains anisotropies analogous to those of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) of photons, and that these too may be within reach of proposed gravitational wave detectors. Correlations within the gravitational wave anisotropies and their cross-correlations with the CMB can provide new insights into the mechanism underlying primordial fluctuations, such as multifield inflation, as well as reveal the existence of nonstandard "hidden sectors" of particle physics in earlier eras.

Critical Number of Fields in Stochastic Inflation.

Phys Rev Lett

January 2017

Institute of Cosmology & Gravitation, University of Portsmouth, Dennis Sciama Building, Burnaby Road, Portsmouth, PO1 3FX, United Kingdom.

Stochastic effects in generic scenarios of inflation with multiple fields are investigated. First passage time techniques are employed to calculate the statistical moments of the number of inflationary e-folds, which give rise to all correlation functions of primordial curvature perturbations through the stochastic δN formalism. The number of fields is a critical parameter.
