Non-fullerene acceptors have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their potential as alternatives to fullerene derivatives in bulk-heterojunction solar cells. Nevertheless, physical understanding of charge carrier generation and transfer mechanism that occurred at the interface between the non-fullerene molecule and donor polymer is still behind their enhanced photovoltaic performance. Here we report examples of a non-planar perylene dimer (TP) as an electron acceptor and achieve a power conversion efficiency of 6.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) with bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structures consisting of electron-donor and electron-acceptor materials have achieved impressive progress over the past decade, demonstrating their great potential in practical applications. In this study, we have designed five fullerene-free acceptor-based molecules containing indaceno-dithiophene as a central core moiety. We studied the optoelectronic features of these newly architecture molecules by using DFT and TD-DFT approaches.

In recent years, tremendous growth has been seen for solution-processed bulk heterojunction solar cells (BHJSCs) using fullerene-free molecular acceptors. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization of a coumarin-based organic semiconducting molecule C1, and its use in BHJSCs as an electron donor. The compound exhibited an absorption band at 472 nm in chloroform solution with an optical energy gap of 2.

It is of great significance to develop efficient donor polymers during the rapid development of acceptor materials for nonfullerene bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells. Herein, a new donor polymer, named PBTT-F, based on a strongly electron-deficient core (5,7-dibromo-2,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione, TTDO), is developed through the design of cyclohexane-1,4-dione embedded into a thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TT) unit. When blended with the acceptor Y6, the PBTT-F-based photovoltaic device exhibits an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.

Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure based organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have recently showed great potential for achieving high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). An ideal BHJ structure would feature large donor/acceptor interfacial areas for efficient exciton dissociation and gradient distributions with high donor and acceptor concentrations near the anode and cathode, respectively, for efficient charge extraction. However, the random mixing of donors and acceptors in the BHJ often suffers the severe charge recombination in the interface, resulting in poor charge extraction.
