Nanoparticle sulphated zirconia with Brønsted acidic sites were prepared here by an impregnation reaction followed by calcination at 600°C for 3 hours. The characterization was completed using X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunner-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the anticancer and antimicrobial effects were investigated for the first time. This study showed for the first time that the exposure of cancer cells to sulphated zirconia nanoparticles (3.9-1,000 μg/mL for 24 hours) resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth, as determined by (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays. Similar promising results were observed for reducing bacteria functions. In this manner, this study demonstrated that sulphated zirconia nanoparticles with Brønsted acidic sites should be further studied for a wide range of anticancer and antibacterial applications.

To expand the utility of cyclodextrin nanosponges for catalytic purpose, β-cyclodextrin nanosponge was prepared via melting method and then utilized as a catalyst support for the stabilization of sulphated zirconia The resulting catalyst, denoted as CDNS-SO/ZrO, was then applied as a heterogeneous acidic catalyst for conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The results, underpinned that the catalytic activity of CDNS-SO/ZrO, was superior to that of ZrO and SO/ZrO, confirming the role of sulfonation of ZrO and immobilization of SO/ZrO on CDNS in catalysis. To optimize the reaction parameters and achieve maximum yield of the desired product, Response Surface Method that is an accurate procedure for appraising the impacts of the reaction variables was employed and it was found that using 35 wt% CDNS-SO/ZrO at 80 °C, HMF in 93 % yield was achieved in 45 min.

The use of homogeneous Brønsted acid cocatalysts (such as benzoic acid) in hydroacylation reactions imine intermediates has been extensively studied. However, the use of heterogeneous cocatalysts has been limited to montmorillonite K10. Thus, we can use other solid acids to increase the efficiency of the reaction.

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Polyethylene with Microporous and Mesoporous Materials: Assessing Performance and Mechanistic Understanding.

Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis group, Institute for Sustainable and Circular Chemistry, Utrecht University, Universiteitsweg 99, 3584, CG Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Testing the catalytic performance for the catalytic pyrolysis of plastic waste is hampered by mass transfer limitations induced by a size mismatch between the catalyst's pores and the bulky polymer molecules. To investigate this aspect, the catalytic behaviour of a series of microporous and mesoporous materials was assessed in the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene (PE). More specifically, a mesoporous material, namely sulfated zirconia (Zr(SO)) on SBA-15, was synthesized to increase the pore accessibility, which reduces mass transfer limitations and thereby enables to better assess the effect of active site density on catalyst activity.

Radiopaque and Biocompatible PMMA Bone Cement Triggered by Nano Tantalum Carbide and Its Osteogenic Performance.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

September 2024

College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu 215123, China.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cements have been widely used in orthopedics; thanks to their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and chemical stability. Barium sulfate and zirconia are usually added into PMMA bone cement to enhance the X-ray radiopacity, while the mechanical strength, radiopacity, and biocompatibility are not well improved. In this study, an insoluble and corrosion-resistant ceramic, tantalum carbide (TaC), was added into the PMMA bone cement as radiopacifies, significantly improving the mechanical, radiopaque, biocompatibility, and osteogenic performance of bone cement.
