Cutaneous metastasis from solid tumors is a rare manifestation that presents in the clinic. It is usually indicative of poor prognosis, with a poor response to conventional chemotherapy. The introduction of targeted therapy has changed the treatment paradigm in oncology, improving the quality of life and survival of all cancer patients.

Dysregulation of mRNA expression by hsa-miR-186 overexpression in arsenic-induced skin carcinogenesis.

Toxicol Appl Pharmacol

December 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Louisville, 505 S. Hancock Street, Louisville, KY 40202, USA; Center for Integrative Environmental Health Sciences, University of Louisville, 505 S. Hancock Street, Louisville, KY 40202, USA. Electronic address:

Dysregulated miRNA expression contributes to development of arsenic-induced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). hsa-miR-186 (miR-186) is overexpressed in arsenical cSCC tissues as well as in preclinical cell line model of arsenical cSCC. Simultaneous miR-186 overexpression and chronic inorganic trivalent arsenite (iAs; 100 nM) exposure transformed human HaCaT cell line preferentially over miR-186 overexpression or iAs exposure alone.

Voltage-sensitive calcium channels contribute to depolarization of both motor- and interneurons in animal studies, but less is known of their contribution to human motor control and whether blocking them has potential in future antispasmodic treatment in humans. Therefore, this study investigated the acute effect of Nimodipine on the transmission of human spinal reflex pathways involved in spasticity. In a double-blinded, cross-over study, we measured soleus muscle stretch- and H-reflexes, and tibialis anterior cutaneous reflexes in nineteen healthy subjects before and after Nimodipine (tab-let 60mg) or Baclofen (tablet 25mg).

Vascular Basement Membrane Fragmentation in Keloids and the Expression of Key Basement Membrane Component Genes.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

December 2024

From the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Nippon Medical School Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

Background: Keloids are growing scars that arise from injury to the reticular dermis and subsequent chronic local inflammation. The latter may be promoted by vascular hyperpermeability, which permits the ingress of chronic inflammatory cells/factors. Cutaneous capillaries consist of endothelial cells that generate, and are anchored by, a vascular basement membrane (VBM).

Objectives: Systemic sclerosis (SSc), a chronic autoimmune disorder, characterised by local inflammation and progressive fibrosis. Tumour necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) has been established as a key mediator in fibrotic processes across multiple organs, primarily through binding to its receptor, fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14). However, the precise role of the TWEAK/Fn14 signalling in SSc pathogenesis remains unclear.
