Published: July 2015

Introduction: In Brazil, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has spread to various regions. This study reports canine cases of VL in Barra Mansa, where human VL cases were recently reported.

Methods: Using the human index case, a canine survey was performed by dual-path platform immunochromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Seropositive animals were euthanized. Cultures were collected to detect Leishmania parasites.

Results: Serological tests detected 141 canine VL cases, and Leishmania chagasi were isolated from 82.2% animals.

Conclusions: Leishmania chagasi is in circulation in Barra Mansa. This study broadens information on the parasite's distribution in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Article Synopsis
  • - This article discusses a golden-billed saltator (Saltator aurantiirostris) found in captivity near Itatiaia National Park, which serves as a new host for the parasite Isospora similisi, first identified in another bird species.
  • - The researchers performed molecular identification by sequencing mitochondrial DNA and a ribosomal RNA gene, confirming that the oocysts (spores) from the golden-billed saltator are essentially the same as those from the previously studied saltator species.
  • - The study proposes that Isospora similisi might actually be a junior synonym of Isospora formarum due to similar characteristics and suggests further research on Isospora similisi from various saltator species to clarify its

Background: The development of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs plays a crucial role in modern medicine, aiming to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in patients. Opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are groups of drugs conventionally used to treat pain and inflammation, but a wide range of adverse effects and ineffectiveness in some pathological conditions leads us to search for new drugs with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Objectives: In this regard, the authors intend to investigate the ((2s,6s)-6-ethyl-tetrahydro-2h-pyran- 2-yl) methanol compound (LS20) on pain and acute inflammation.

Objective: We hypothesized that perinatal manipulations of the nitrergic system would affect adult animal behaviors.

Methods: We tested this hypothesis by perinatally administering N(G)-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a non-specific antagonist of nitric oxide synthase for 15 days and assessed anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice. At 70 days of age, the mice were subjected to a battery of tests consisting of the open-field, light/dark box, forced swim, and tail-flick tests.
