AI Article Synopsis

  • * Myosin isoforms 6 and 10 feature a stable single α-helical (SAH) domain that enhances the length of the lever, allowing for larger steps in movement.
  • * Research through atomic force microscopy and simulations indicates that SAH domains can unfold and refold at low forces, which likely aids in their function within dense cellular environments.

Article Abstract

The human genome contains 39 myosin genes, divided up into 12 different classes. The structure, cellular function and biochemical properties of many of these isoforms remain poorly characterized and there is still some controversy as to whether some myosin isoforms are monomers or dimers. Myosin isoforms 6 and 10 contain a stable single α-helical (SAH) domain, situated just after the canonical lever. The SAH domain is stiff enough to be able to lengthen the lever allowing the myosin to take a larger step. In addition, atomic force microscopy and atomistic simulations show that SAH domains unfold at relatively low forces and have a high propensity to refold. These properties are likely to be important for protein function, enabling motors to carry cargo in dense actin networks, and other proteins to remain attached to binding partners in the crowded cell.

In the Philippines, the co-occurrence of two or more types of malnutrition in an individual, also known as intra-individual double burden of malnutrition (DBM), has rarely been investigated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and the factors associated with DBM at the individual level among Filipino women of reproductive age (WRA) using the data collected from the 2018 Philippine Expanded National Nutrition Survey. For this study, intra-individual DBM was defined as the co-existence of overweight or obesity and anemia in an individual.

In this study, five catalysts with Pd particle sizes ranging from single atoms to nanoclusters and nanoparticles were synthesized by controlling the Pd loading amount and preparation methods, and applied in the hydrogenation of FDCA to THFDCA. Furthermore, kinetic models were established. Notably, the nanocluster catalyst demonstrated relatively high hydrogenation activity.

Limitations in quantum metrology approaches to imaging resolution.

Can a quantum advantage for imaging resolution be realized with the help of quantum estimation theory? We expect so, but we show that, presently, theoretical tools are insufficiently developed to answer this question for extended objects. Still, there is much to be learned from the current state of the art. In this review, we re-examine prominent results in the literature and probe the limits of quantum metrology in addressing imaging resolution.

Non-classicality and the effect of one photon.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College, London SW72AZ, UK.

The quantum interference effects of mixing the most non-classical states of light, number states, with the most classical-like of pure field states, the coherent state, are investigated. We demonstrate how the non-classicality of a single photon when mixed with a coherent field can transform the statistical properties of the output and further demonstrate that the entanglement of the output is independent of the coherent state amplitude. This article is part of the theme issue 'The quantum theory of light'.
