Objectives: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a treatable neurological syndrome developing in the elderly. It is characterized by balance impairment, urinary incontinence and dementia development caused by disorders in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. The diagnosis can be easily mistaken for other neurodegenerative diseases, which are often accompanied by inflammation and the production of cytokines. The aim of our study was to determine and compare selected CSF and plasma cytokines with respect to their informative value for laboratory diagnostics of NPH.
Methods: The levels of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-21, IL-22, IL-23, IL-25, IL-31, IL-33, INF-γ, sCD40L and TNF-α were measured in the CSF and plasma in age-matched subjects with NPH (n=20) and controls (n=20) by multiplex assay.
Results: CSF IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly increased on the 1st day of lumbar drainage in NPH (p<0.01). No significant changes were observed in the plasma. The CSF cytokines were one to three orders of magnitude higher compared to the plasma.
Conclusion: CSF can better show the neurodegenerative changes in the brain. The cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 may be helpful in NPH diagnostics.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and biomarkers are needed to enhance earlier detection and monitoring. Alpha-synuclein, phosphorylated at serine 129 (pS129-α-syn), is the predominant form of α-syn found in Lewy bodies implicating an involvement in disease pathology. This review aims to systematically evaluate the evidence for pS129-α-syn detection in human biofluid samples of PD utilizing ELISA-based protein detection methods.

Background: Patients with ALK-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (ALK+ NSCLC) with symptomatic brain (BM) and leptomeningeal (LM) metastases are underrepresented in clinical trials due to poor performance status. Additionally, the need for improved and validated assessment criteria for evaluating central nervous system (CNS) response remains critical. Purpose: We aimed to characterize and further understand CSF circulation and outflow of rabbits. To our knowledge, there is no research on contrast material-enhanced MR cisternography (CE-MRC) with T1 and T2 mapping in the rabbit model using a clinical 3-T MR unit without a stereotaxic frame.

Introduction: Pediatric temporal bone fractures (TBFs) can result in adverse outcomes including meningitis, significant sensorineural hearing loss requiring cochlear implantation (CI), facial nerve weakness, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, and labyrinthitis. The objective of this study is to determine the risks of these outcomes for TBFs with hearing loss.
Methods: Using the multinational TriNetX database, a retrospective cohort study was performed of patients less than 18 years old with diagnostic codes for other fracture of base of skull and hearing loss to serve as an approximation of TBF.
Spinal cord sarcoidosis, an uncommon manifestation of neurosarcoidosis, presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because the condition is rare and has diverse clinical manifestations that can mimic other conditions such as multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. A middle-aged African American female with a history of idiopathic intracranial hypertension and hydrocephalus with ventriculoperitoneal shunt presented with progressive, predominantly left-sided gait instability, weakness, and paresthesia. Cerebrospinal fluid showed lymphocytosis, red blood cells, elevated oligoclonal bands, and elevated kappa free light chains, concerning for multiple sclerosis.
