Self-Rated Health, Interviewer-Rated Health, and Their Predictive Powers on Mortality in Old Age.

Published: May 2016

Objectives: This study examines the potential use of interviewer-rated health (IRH) as a complementary measure of self-rated health (SRH) through a systematic comparison of their components and mortality-predictive powers in the Chinese elderly population.

Methods: This study used a nationwide dataset with more than 12,000 adults aged 65 or older drawn from the 2005 and 2008 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS).

Results: Disability, cognitive function, chronic disease conditions, psychological well-being, and health behaviors influenced both the SRH and IRH of Chinese older adults; these factors, especially disabilities, explained a large portion of the association between SRH and mortality. However, the impact of these factors on the association between IRH and mortality was limited. Furthermore, when both SRH and IRH were included in the analytical models, the association between SRH and mortality disappeared, while the association between IRH and mortality still persisted.

Discussion: Although there is some difference between IRH and SRH, IRH captures similar health information as SRH and is strongly predictive of mortality independent of SRH; thus, IRH could be a good supplementary measurement for well-adopted SRH.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how self-rated health (SRH), interviewer-rated health (IRH), and objective health (measured by the Chinese multimorbidity-weighted index, CMWI) correlate with mortality among older adults in China over a ten-year period.
  • Utilizing data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey and a sample of 13,800 participants, findings show that higher baseline levels of SRH, IRH, and CMWI significantly lower the risk of death.
  • Additionally, the changes in these health assessments from 2008 to 2014, along with trajectory modeling, indicate that consistently high levels of SRH and IRH notably reduce mortality compared to declining levels.

Purpose: To investigate the usefulness of anatomic site-oriented therapy for macular hemorrhage secondary to retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM).

Study Design: Retrospective observational study, clinical case series METHODS: Twenty-seven consecutive patients (27 eyes) with macular hemorrhage secondary to RAM were classified according to the retinal layer(s) with hemorrhage identified by optical coherence tomography into 4 types and treated differentially. Vitrectomy was conducted for subinternal limiting membrane hemorrhage (SILMH), intravitreal gas injection for subretinal hemorrhage (SRH) or intraretinal hemorrhage (IRH), and vitrectomy and intravitreal air/gas exchange for multilevel hemorrhage (at least 2 among SILMH/SRH/IRH).

Objectives: Recent research indicates that survey interviewers' ratings of respondents' health (IRH) may provide supplementary health information about respondents in surveys of older adults. Although IRH is a potentially promising measure of health to include in surveys, our understanding of the factors contributing to IRH remains incomplete.

Methods: We use data from the 2011 face-to-face wave of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, a longitudinal study of older adults from the Wisconsin high school class of 1957 and their selected siblings.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new slow-release preparation of hydromorphone (SRH) in the treatment of cancer pain.

Patients And Methods: Ninety-five adult patients from three Canadian Palliative Care Centers with no evidence of mental impairment received treatment for cancer pain with an oral opioid analgesic. After informed consent was obtained, patients underwent titration to a stable dose of immediate-release hydromorphone (IRH) for 48 hours, and were then randomized to receive IRH or SRH for 5 days in a double-blind basis.
