In this paper, we provide a scheme to compute the absolute free energy of a smectic-A phase via the "indirect method." The state of interest is connected through a three-step reversible path to a reference state. This state consists of a low-density layer of rods coupled to two external fields maintaining these rods close to the layer's plane and oriented preferably normal to the layer. The low-density free energy of the reference state can be computed on the basis of the relevant second virial coefficients between two rods coupled to the two external fields. We apply this technique to the Gay-Berne potential for calamitics with a parameter set leading to stable isotropic (I), nematic (N), smectic-A (SmA), and crystal (Cr) phases. We locate the I-SmA phase transition at low pressure and the sequence of phase transitions I-N-SmA along higher-pressure isobars and we establish the location of the I-N-SmA triple point. Close to this triple point, we show that the N-SmA transition is clearly first order. Our results are compared to the coexistence lines of the approximate phase diagram elucidated by de Miguel et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 11183 (2004)] established through the direct observation of the sequence of phase transitions occurring along isobars under heating or cooling sequences of runs. Finally, we discuss the potential of our technique in studying similar transitions observed on layered phases under confinement.

Gray mold is an important disease of crops and is widespread, harmful, difficult to control, and prone to developing fungicide resistance. Screening new fungicides is an important step in controlling this disease. Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-inflammatory and anti-malarial agent, which has shown marked inhibitory activity against many fungi in medicine.

Understanding how structural modifications affect the photophysics of organic linkers is crucial for their integration into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for light-driven applications. This study explores the impact of varying the amine functional group position on two terephthalic acid derivatives─linker and linker ─by investigating their photophysics through a combination of steady-state and ultrafast laser spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. With tetrahydrofuran as the solvent, time-correlated single-photon counting revealed a 2-fold increase in the S excited-state lifetime of the molecule with the amine group at the meta position compared with that of the molecule with the amine group at the ortho position.

In my proposed mechanism of Mo-nitrogenase there are two roles for separate N molecules. One N diffuses into the reaction zone between Fe2 and Fe6 where a strategic gallery of H atoms can capture N to form the Fe-bound HNNH intermediate which is then progressively hydrogenated through intermediates containing HNNH, NH and NH entities and then two NH in sequence. The second N can be parked in an N-pocket about 3.

Attachment of three different heterocycles with electron donor or acceptor character to a central 1,3,5-triazine core generates readily soluble side-chain free dyes with two displaying soft crystalline mesomorphism and one displaying a nematic liquid crystal phase as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy, calorimetry, gravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. Equally intriguing is the dyes' relatively strong electronic communication between donor and acceptor subchromophores that are meta-conjugated to one another, which is experimentally observed as a broad intramolecular charge-transfer absorption that can extend over 100 nm past the most intense absorption event and is computationally confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) evaluations of the molecular ground- and excited-state properties. This molecular design permits the preparation of dyes with panchromatic absorption not just based on the additive absorption of individual subchromophores.

As an effective method to enhance the dielectric performance of polyolefin materials, polar side group modification has been extensively applied in the insulation and energy storage materials of electrical and electronic systems. In this work, two side groups with different topological structures were adopted, namely, vinyl acetate (VAc, aliphatic chain) and -vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP, saturated ring), to modify polypropylene (PP) chemical grafting, and the effects of structural topology of the polar side group on the microscopic and macroscopic characteristics of PP, particularly on its electrical anti-breakdown ability, were investigated. Experimental results showed that the side group structural topology directly affected the crystallization and thermal properties of PP.
