Acute adult epiglottitis is a rare and potentially fatal upper airway condition, requiring prompt recognition, resuscitation, stabilization, and transfer to definitive care. Treatment centers on skilled airway management and early antimicrobial therapy. We describe a patient with acute adult epiglottitis in whom airway management using noninvasive positive pressure ventilation was successful allowing avoidance of tracheal intubation.

Background: Aerobic exercise may positively affect brain health, although relationships with cognitive change are mixed. This likely is due to individual differences in the systemic physiological response to exercise. However, the acute effects of exercise on brain metabolism and biomarker responses are not well characterized in older adults or cognitively impaired individuals.

Background: Over 15 million informal caregivers provide assistance to persons living with dementia. Despite increasing emergency department (ED) use within the population, little is known regarding the support required of older adults seeking acute care with varying degrees of cognitive impairment. Our objectives were to quantify the daily care hours that informal caregivers provide to older ED patients with diagnosed dementia, undiagnosed cognitive impairment, and intact cognition.

Background: People living with dementia (PLWD) are high utilizers of acute illness and emergency care, with over 50% of the more than 6 million people with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease related dementia (ADRD) visiting an emergency department (ED) annually. While the ED plays an important role meeting the urgent and acute needs of PLWD and their caregivers, presence of ADRD is often not well recognized and ED visits are associated with significant adverse outcomes for PLWD. Despite these factors, research on the emergency care needs of PLWD is extremely limited.

Older adults use the emergency department (ED) as an important source of acute medical care, making 20+ million visits annually. Persons living with dementia are twice as likely to use the ED and 1.5 times more likely to have an avoidable visit.

Using physical restraints leads to functional decline and increased mortality. Our project aims to reduce restraint use by implementing a 4Ms approach for enhanced delirium management.
