Objective: To evaluate the behaviour of the upper rectus abdominis, lower rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis/internal oblique (TrA/IO) by using surface electromyography during trunk flexion with and without the Pilates breathing technique.

Methods: Nineteen female subjects (without experience of the Pilates method) were recruited. The muscles were evaluated while trunk flexion was performed by using the Pilates breathing technique (POW) and Step Barrel device, followed by another contraction without the technique (NORM). Normality was accepted, and the paired t-test was used to determine data differences (p < 0.05).

Results: Significant differences were noted in the amplitude level of activation between TrA/IO-POW and TrA/IO-NORM. The activation amplitude level of TrA/IO-POW significantly increased compared with all the other muscles under the NORM condition.

Conclusion: The breathing technique of the Pilates method associated with trunk flexion increases TrA/IO electrical activity.

Article Synopsis
  • Exercise is an important way to help treat chronic low back pain, and this study looks at how breathing techniques can make exercise even better.
  • They studied two groups: one did regular exercises, while the other combined those exercises with special breathing.
  • Results showed that people who used breathing techniques felt less pain and improved more than those who didn't use breathing, showing it could be a great way to help with back pain.

Pilates is a holistic exercise focused on respiration, body control, and accuracy of movements, and it improves respiratory muscle strength, balance, quality of life, and overall physical performance. However, little is known about the effect of Pilates on sleep quality. The purpose of the present prospective observational study was to evaluate the effect of four months of Pilates training on the quality of sleep, aerobic capacity, and anaerobic power in premenopausal women.

Unlabelled: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Pilates-based exercise training applied with hybrid telerehabilitation on Cobb angle, respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, and functional capacity in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This is an evaluator-blinded, randomized, controlled trial. For the study, 32 patients were randomly allocated into two groups: a hybrid telerehabilitation group (training group), provided with modified Pilates-based exercises with synchronous sessions; and a home-based group (control group), doing the same exercises in their home.

Background: Balance impairments are common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), with reduced ability to maintain position and delayed responses to postural adjustments. Pilates is a popular alternative method for balance training that may reduce the rapid worsening of symptoms and the increased risk of secondary conditions (eg, depression) that are frequently associated with physical inactivity.

Objective: In this paper, we aimed to describe the design, development, and usability testing of MS Fitness Intervention Training (MS-FIT), a Kinect-based tool implementing Pilates exercises customized for MS.
