The identification of cancer-specific biomolecules is of fundamental importance to the development of diagnostic and/or prognostic markers, which may also serve as therapeutic targets. Some antigenic proteins are only normally present in male gametogenic tissues in the testis and not in normal somatic cells. When these proteins are aberrantly produced in cancer they are referred to as cancer/testis (CT) antigens (CTAs). Some CTA genes have been proven to encode immunogenic proteins that have been used as successful immunotherapy targets for various forms of cancer and have been implicated as drug targets. Here, a targeted in silico analysis of cancer expressed sequence tag (EST) data sets resulted in the identification of a significant number of novel CT genes. The expression profiles of these genes were validated in a range of normal and cancerous cell types. Subsequent meta-analysis of gene expression microarray data sets demonstrates that these genes are clinically relevant as cancer-specific biomarkers, which could pave the way for the discovery of new therapies and/or diagnostic/prognostic monitoring technologies.

Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has developed over the last few decades into a valuable crystallographic characterisation method for a wide range of sample types. Despite these advances, issues such as the complexity of sample preparation, relatively slow acquisition, and damage in beam-sensitive samples, still limit the quantity and quality of interpretable data that can be obtained. To mitigate these issues, here we propose a method based on the subsampling of probe positions and subsequent reconstruction of an incomplete data set.

The HoloFood project used a hologenomic approach to understand the impact of host-microbiota interactions on salmon and chicken production by analysing multiomic data, phenotypic characteristics, and associated metadata in response to novel feeds. The project's raw data, derived analyses, and metadata are deposited in public, open archives (BioSamples, European Nucleotide Archive, MetaboLights, and MGnify), so making use of these diverse data types may require access to multiple resources. This is especially complex where analysis pipelines produce derived outputs such as functional profiles or genome catalogues.

The possibilities of the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)/Enhanced Living Environments (ELE) concept in the environment of a smart home were investigated to improve accessibility and improve the quality of life of a person with disabilities. This paper focuses on the concept of predictive information for a person with disabilities in a smart home environment concept where artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems use data on the user's preferences, habits, and possible incident situations. A conceptual mathematical model is proposed, the purpose of which is to provide predictive user information from defined data sets.

The appearances of Schisandrae Sphenantherae Fructus (SSF) and Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (SCF) are very similar. Thus, being able to distinguish between SSF and SCF is useful for the quality control of these herbal medicines. In this study, two kinds of electrochemical fingerprint analyses using voltammetry or HPLC with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) were developed in combination with multivariate analysis for discriminating between SSF and SCF.
