A new algorithm for time-delay estimation in ultrasonic echo signals.

IEEE Trans Ultrason Ferroelectr Freq Control

Published: January 2015

Time-delay estimation determines the relative displacement between two ultrasound echo signals. In this paper, we propose a new time-delay estimation algorithm which uses only the sign function to obtain the corresponding timedelay estimate. The performance of the proposed algorithm was compared with two established algorithms, i.e., normalized cross-correlation (NCC) and sum of squared differences (SSD), using metrics such as statistical analysis and computational time. All simulated ultrasound echo signals were generated using ultrasound simulation software. The results indicated that overall, the proposed algorithm had similar accuracy and precision compared with the NCC and SSD algorithms; however, the computational time of the proposed algorithm was about 70% less than NCC and SSD, which showed a significant improvement.

The precise localization of epileptic foci with the help of EEG or iEEG signals is still a clinical challenge with current methodology, especially if the foci are not close to individual electrodes. On the research side, dipole reconstruction for focus localization is a topic of recent and current developments. Relatively low numbers of recording electrodes cause ill-posed and ill-conditioned problems in the inversion of lead-field matrices to calculate the focus location.

Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate the performance of two types of recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent units (GRU), using Monte Carlo dropout (MCD) to predict pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) data.

Methods: DCE-MRI data for simulation studies were synthesized using the extended Tofts model and a population-averaged arterial input function (AIF). The ranges of PK parameters for training the RNNs were determined from data of patients with brain tumors.

In general, auto-tuning implementation of PID controllers relies on dual controllers, exciting/identification experiments or some prior knowledge on the process and hence the considerable cost on auto-tuning implementation occurs. To deal with such a problem, a new auto-tuning scheme of the FPID controller is developed for minimum variance tasks under routine operating conditions in which the closed-loop system is running without any external excitation other than natural disturbances. This paper reveals that the stochastic disturbance model can be uniquely determined from the first several terms of the impulse response coefficients of the closed-loop system when the precondition on the time delay and the order of the disturbance model is satisfied.

We considered predator-prey models which incorporated both an Allee effect and a new fear factor effect together, and where the predator predated the prey with a Holling type I functional response. We started off with a two-dimensional model where we found possible equilibria and examined their stabilities. By using the predator mortality rate as the bifurcation parameter, the model exhibited Hopf-bifurcation for the coexistence equilibrium.

Background: Metrics evaluating the functional quality of red blood cells (RBCs) must consider their role in oxygen delivery. Whereas oxygen-carrying capacity is routinely reported using haemoglobin assays, the rate of oxygen exchange is not measured, yet also important for tissue oxygenation. Since oxygen-unloading depends on the diffusion pathlength inside RBCs, cell geometry offers a plausible surrogate.
