Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that acute TCDD toxicity is associated with pituitary hypofunction. Sexually mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were given graded doses of TCDD (0-100 micrograms/kg) and evaluated 7 days later. Despite pronounced hypophagia and body weight loss, plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were not significantly affected by any dose of TCDD. Only prolactin (PRL) concentrations were reduced, while, as previously reported, thyroid-stimulating hormone concentrations were elevated. Also, plasma LH, PRL, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations were not significantly affected 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 days after a single dose of TCDD (50 micrograms/kg). We conclude that (1) pituitary hypofunction is not a major cause of the initial stages of acute TCDD toxicity, (2) growth retardation in TCDD-treated rats is not the result of a deficiency of GH, (3) alterations in plasma corticosterone concentrations are due to altered responsiveness of the adrenal to ACTH stimulation rather than to changes in plasma ACTH concentrations, and (4) that impaired spermatogenesis is not associated with a decrease in plasma FSH concentrations. In addition, the lack of a consistent effect on plasma PRL concentrations suggests that alterations in plasma PRL concentrations do not play a critical role in the toxicity of TCDD. Finally, because TCDD treatment causes a serious androgenic deficiency without increasing the rates at which androgens are catabolized or excreted, the fact that plasma LH concentrations were unaffected indicates that TCDD treatment must reduce the responsiveness of the testis to LH stimulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are ubiquitous enzymes that catalyze reversibly both the hydration and dehydration reactions of CO and HCO-, respectively. Higher plants contain many different isoforms of CAs that can be classified into α-, β- and γ-type subfamilies. β-type CAs play a key role in the CO-concentrating mechanism, thereby contributing to efficient photosynthesis in the C plants in addition to many other biochemical reactions in plant metabolism.

Objective: Early detection of cancer is crucial for reducing the global burden of cancer, but effective screening tests for many cancers do not exist. This study aimed to develop a novel proteome-based multi-cancer screening test that can detect early-stage cancers with high accuracy.
Methods And Analysis: We collected plasma samples from 440 individuals, healthy and diagnosed with 18 early-stage solid tumours.

Significant changes in pre-dialytic partial pressure of CO (pCO) during a week-long cycle of hemodialysis (HD) can be an effect of the intermittent supplementation of bicarbonate to correct chronic acidosis in patients. Mathematical modeling efforts carried out using the same parameters before each HD session might fail to produce accurate predictions of pCO and plasma bicarbonate concentration (C) because of this variability. A numerical model describing acid-base equilibrium changes during HD was applied to predict pCO, pH, and C in 24 chronic HD patients, using both fixed parameters for the whole week and estimating a new value of minute ventilation (V) and net acid generation rate (G) for each interdialytic interval.

Background: The association of plasma metals on the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in adults with prediabetes remains poorly investigated. To assess the association between plasma metal exposure and the risk of CVD in prediabetic adults in the United States using five plasma metals.
Methods: Five cycles of data (2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018) from the NHANES were adopted in this study.

Phthalates are synthetic compounds, well-known plasticizers, with numerous applications and reported to have adverse effects on all living organisms residing in terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, the rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings were exposed to di-butyl phthalate (DBP) exogenously for 7 days, with varying concentrations of 0, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 mg/L, to explore the toxicological, physiological, and biochemical consequences by measuring various parameters such as pigment, lipid, and HO (hydrogen peroxide) contents. The biochemical analysis of seedlings showed that the pigments, lipids, and HO concentrations were altered abnormally.
