Purpose: This study explored the possible association of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the three folate-related enzyme genes: MTHFR C677T and A1298C, MTR A2756G and MTRR A66G, with male infertility in the Chinese population.

Methods: The polymorphic distributions of the four SNPs (MTHFR C677T and A1298C, MTR A2756G and MTRR A66G) were investigated by the method of SNaPshot in a Chinese cohort including 296 idiopathic infertile males with azoospermia or oligozoospermia and 204 fertile males.

Results: We found no evidence for an association between any of these variants (MTHFR C677T and A1298C, MTR A2756G and MTRR A66G) and male infertility.

Conclusions: There is no evidence for an association between male infertility and polymorphism of the three folate-related enzyme genes in the Chinese population.

Background: Studies showed that folate and related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) could predict prostate cancer (PCa) risk. However, little is known about the interactions of folate-related SNPs associated with PCa aggressiveness. The study's objective is to evaluate SNP-SNP interactions among the DHFR 19-bp polymorphism and 10 SNPs in folate metabolism and the one-carbon metabolism pathway associated with PCa aggressiveness.

Objective: To test the "vitamin D-folate hypothesis for the evolution of human skin pigmentation."

Methods: Total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) satellite data were used to examine surface UV-irradiance in a large (n = 649) Australian cross-sectional study population. Genetic analysis was used to score vitamin D- and folate-related gene polymorphisms (n = 22), along with two pigmentation gene variants (IRF4-rs12203592/HERC2-rs12913832).

Background: Foxtail millet grain has higher folate content than other cereal crops. However, the folate metabolite content and the expression patterns of folate metabolite-related genes are unknown.

Results: Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to investigate 12 folate metabolites in a foxtail millet panicle.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between specific genetic variations (SNPs) in genes related to S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) synthesis and the occurrence of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in a Chilean population.
  • Through analysis of 234 cases and 309 controls, researchers identified three specific SNPs in the MTR gene that appear to offer protection against NSCL/P by correlating with lower levels of MTR expression, which influences SAM availability.
  • The findings highlight the importance of genetic variants in the SAM synthesis pathway as potential markers for NSCL/P, suggesting further research is needed for functional validation and implications in genetic counseling.

The methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase () C677T, A1298C, and the methionine synthase reductase () A66G polymorphisms are the three most common folate metabolism-related loci in the Chinese population. They are associated with numerous birth defects or congenital diseases. To facilitate screening and genetic counseling, we established a method for the simultaneous detection of these three polymorphisms using the Luminex liquid suspension chip and multiple asymmetric polymerase chain reactions (PCRs).
