Published: February 2015

A synthetic process for constructing an organo-metal nanohybrid is described. This process uses polyaniline as a ligand in order to fabricate magnetic nanoparticles. This nanohybrid shows imaging potential uses as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent and a redox-sensing probe simultaneously both in vitro and in vivo.

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (TcPCO2) monitoring provides a non-invasive alternative to measuring arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2), making it valuable for various applications, such as sleep diagnostics and neonatal care. However, traditional transcutaneous monitors are bulky, expensive, and pose risks such as skin burns. To address these limitations, we have introduced a compact, cost-effective CMOS imager-based sensor for TcPCO2 detection by utilizing colorimetric reactions with metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nano-hybrid materials.

At the present time, owing to the extremely high growth of microbial resistance to antibiotics and, consequently, the increased healthcare associated costs and the loss of efficacy of current treatments, the development of new therapies against bacteria is of paramount importance. For this reason, in this work, a hybrid synergetic nanovector has been developed, based on the encapsulation of a NIR (near infrared) photosensitive molecule (indocyanine green, ICG) in biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles (NPs). In addition, copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs), optically sensitive to NIR, were anchored on the polymeric nanoparticle shell in order to boost the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon NIR irradiation.

Molecular diagnosis plays a significant role in detection of biomolecules linked to early stage cancer since it offers greater sensitivity and reliability for identification of biomarker level changes as the disease progresses. The application of vibrational spectroscopy in biomarker detection is defined by the fingerprint spectrum of a molecule originating from single-molecule vibrations. This characteristic makes surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) a promising tool for identification of biomarkers.
