One of the mechanisms adopted by the central nervous system to stabilize the joints or the spine is muscle co-activation. Nevertheless during lifting tasks muscle co-activation increases spinal load. For co-activation assessment during 3 lifting tasks at increasing load levels we utilized a time-varying co-activation algorithm proposed by Rudolph in 2000. We found that Rudolph co-activation index grew with lifting index. The time-varying co-activation index gave a continuous measure of low back compression. A time-varying co-activation index could be of great interest in all conditions in which NIOSH equation is not applicable.

The Lower Limb Muscle Co-Activation Map during Human Locomotion: From Slow Walking to Running.

Bioengineering (Basel)

March 2024

Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Epidemiology and Hygiene, INAIL, Via Fontana Candida 1, Monte Porzio Catone, 00078 Rome, Italy.

The central nervous system (CNS) controls movements and regulates joint stiffness with muscle co-activation, but until now, few studies have examined muscle pairs during running. This study aims to investigate differences in lower limb muscle coactivation during gait at different speeds, from walking to running. Nineteen healthy runners walked and ran at speeds ranging from 0.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a globally prevalent and highly disabling disease characterized by dysfunction of large-scale brain networks. Previous studies have found that static functional connectivity is not sufficient to reflect the complicated and time-varying properties of the brain. The underlying dynamic interactions between brain functional networks of MDD remain largely unknown, and it is also unclear whether neuroimaging-based dynamic properties are sufficiently robust to discriminate individuals with MDD from healthy controls since the diagnosis of MDD mainly depends on symptom-based criteria evaluated by clinical observation.

Trunk muscle activity during holding two types of dynamic loads in subjects with nonspecific low back pain.

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Khalifa University of Science & Technology, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Center of Health Engineering and Innovation, Khalifa University of Science &Technology, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Electronic address:

Background: Chronic low back pain due to manual lifting continues to be one of the significant common public health challenges in modern societies despite increased automation. While there are extensive studies on the biomechanics of lifting as associated with LBP, the role of unstable and time-varying dynamic loads, quite common in industrial lifting and daily life, remains elusive.

Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the response of trunk muscles in subjects with chronic non-specific low back pain (CNLBP) while holding unstable dynamic loads.

Comparison of Resting-State Functional MRI Methods for Characterizing Brain Dynamics.

Front Neural Circuits

April 2022

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, Health Sciences Research Building, Atlanta, GA, United States.

Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) exhibits time-varying patterns of functional connectivity. Several different analysis approaches have been developed for examining these resting-state dynamics including sliding window connectivity (SWC), phase synchrony (PS), co-activation pattern (CAP), and quasi-periodic patterns (QPP). Each of these approaches can be used to generate patterns of activity or inter-areal coordination which vary across time.

Co-activation pattern alterations in autism spectrum disorder-A volume-wise hierarchical clustering fMRI study.

Brain Behav

June 2021

The Faculty of Medicine, Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics and Technology, Oulu Functional NeuroImaging Group, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland.

Article Synopsis
  • There is an increased focus on analyzing how brain networks behave over time in resting state fMRI studies, particularly comparing individuals with autism to typically developing controls.
  • The research employed hierarchical clustering to categorize brain image volumes from adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and typically developing controls, revealing significant differences in voxel-wise means across various resting state networks (RSNs).
  • Findings indicated that while brain state proportions were similar, the ASD group demonstrated more varied activation patterns and reduced deactivation across multiple networks, highlighting differences in brain connectivity and activity states between the two groups.
