Many systems essential to ontogenesis become inappropriate in later life, leading to the ageing of cells and loss of regenerative capacity. Ageing tissues are thus increasingly susceptible to chronic diseases associated with ageing. Upon statistical analysis, the elimination of these diseases would bring about only approximately 15 additional years to the life expectancy. With developing therapies, the making of a precise disease diagnosis upon the eventual death will become increasingly difficult, whereby the term frailty syndrome is utilized.

With increasing age comes the inevitable decline in proteostasis, where chaperone and co-chaperone activity becomes imbalanced. These changes lead to global disturbances and pathogenic rewiring of the chaperone system into epichaperones consisting of protein networks that are ultimately dysfunctional. Such imbalances in proteostasis may favor mechanisms that can lead to neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Ceria nanoparticles (CeONPs) exhibit great potential in cardiovascular disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease due to its excellent antioxidant capacity. However, the profitable effect of CeONPs on many diseases is almost all attributed to the regulation of ROS. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of senile dementia worldwide, characterized by both cognitive and behavioral deficits. Amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) oligomers (AβO) have been found to be responsible for several pathological mechanisms during the development of AD, including altered cellular homeostasis and synaptic function, inevitably leading to cell death. Such AβO deleterious effects provide a way for identifying new molecules with potential anti-AD properties.
