Background: Coughing and deep breathing after sternotomy causes severe pain. This study was conducted to assess the effect of cold therapy on the pain in patients undergoing open heart surgery.

Materials And Methods: In a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with crossover design, 50 eligible and consenting patients were recruited and randomly allocated to gel pack and non-gel pack groups on the first postoperative day. All patients performed four episodes of deep breathing and coughing (DB and C) every 2 h. Pain intesity was measured and compared at rest and after DB and C in both groups. At the end of the study, all patients were asked about their preferences for the cold gel pack application prior to DB and C. The study hypotheses were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA).

Results: Data analysis showed significant reduction in pain scores (P < 0.001) after cold gel application. Forty-five (90%) patients were inclined to reapply the gel pack in the future.

Conclusion: Cold gel pack can reduce the pain associated with DB and C in cardiac surgery patients.

Background: Cryotherapy is a non-pharmacological option that complements drug therapy to achieve the most comprehensive multimodal analgesia. Various techniques are currently available, including the conventional gel cold pack, the cryo-cuff, and a novel mobile cold compression device (MCCD). This study aimed to evaluate and compare three cryotherapy techniques in terms of efficacy and patient satisfaction in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Pairing-specific microstructure in depletion gels of bidisperse colloids.

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University, 911 Partners Way, Raleigh, NC 27606, USA.

We report the ensemble-averaged and pairing-specific network microstructure formed by short-range depletion attractions in hard sphere-like colloidal systems. Gelation is induced by adding polystyrene molecules at a fixed concentration to colloids with different colloid bidispersity ratios ( = 1, 0.72, and 0.

Excessive reservoir water poses significant challenges in the oil and gas industry by diminishing hydrocarbon recovery efficiency and generating environmental and economic complications. Conventional polymer flooding techniques, although beneficial, often prove inadequate under conditions of elevated temperature and salinity, highlighting the need for more resilient materials. In this research, two types of acrylamide-based preformed particle gels (PPGs) were synthesized, as follows: polyelectrolyte and polyampholyte.

Heterogeneous phase combined flooding (HPCF) has been a promising technology used for enhancing oil recovery in heterogeneous mature reservoirs. However, the injectivity and propagation behavior of preformed particle gel (PPG) in low-medium-permeability reservoir porous media is crucial for HPCF treatment in a low-medium-permeability reservoir. Thus, the injectivity and propagation behavior of preformed particle gel in a low-medium-permeability reservoir were systematically studied by conducting a series of sand pack flooding experiments.

Cryotherapy is widely utilized in medicine, particularly for pain management. This randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of intraoral cold pack application (cryotherapy) on postoperative pain (POP) and the level of Substance P (SP) in patients with symptomatic apical periodontitis (SAP). Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to either cryotherapy or control group.
