Apterous and alate viviparous females of Protaphis kvavadzei sp. n. on Eryngium campestre (Apiaceae) and Aphis matricariae sp. n. on Matricaria sp. (Asteraceae) from Turkey are described. The new species are differentiated from other aphids colonising these host plants and from species with similar morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • The sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari, damages various grass family plants, prompting researchers to create a detailed genomic map of its DNA.
  • Using advanced techniques, the study generated a high-quality chromosome-level assembly, revealing a total length of 356.1 Mb and identifying over 12,500 protein-coding genes.
  • Phylogenomic analysis showed that M. sacchari is part of the Aphidini tribe and shares similar chromosome structures with other species in that group, which benefits pest management strategies.

Using Illumina sequencing technology, we generated complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of three constituent species of the aphid genus Koch, (Blanchard), Ghulamullah, and (Geoffroy). The sizes of the mitogenomes range from 15,306 to 15,410 bp, primarily due to variations in the length of non-coding regions. The mitogenomes consist of 37 coding genes arranged in the order of the ancestral insect mitogenome, a control region, and a repeat region between and According to the COI-based analysis, one previously reported mitogenome of should be assigned to .

Pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) are insects containing genes of bacterial origin with putative functions in peptidoglycan (PGN) metabolism. Of these, rlpA1-5, amiD, and ldcA are highly expressed in bacteriocytes, specialized aphid cells that harbor the obligate bacterial symbiont Buchnera aphidicola, required for amino acid supplementation of the host's nutrient-poor diet. Despite genome reduction associated with endosymbiosis, pea aphid Buchnera retains genes for the synthesis of PGN while Buchnera of many other aphid species partially or completely lack these genes.
