We report an intriguing transition from the quantum spin Hall phase to the spin Hall effect upon segregation of thallium adatoms adsorbed onto a graphene surface. Landauer-Büttiker and Kubo-Greenwood simulations are used to access both edge and bulk transport physics in disordered thallium-functionalized graphene systems of realistic sizes. Our findings not only quantify the detrimental effects of adatom clustering in the formation of the topological state, but also provide evidence for the emergence of spin accumulation at opposite sample edges driven by spin-dependent scattering induced by thallium islands, which eventually results in a minimum bulk conductivity ∼4e²/h, insensitive to localization effects.

Tuning anomalous Hall conductivity antiferromagnetic configurations in GdPtBi.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Jl. Ganesha No 10, Bandung 40132, Jawa Barat, Indonesia.

The magnetic, electronic, and topological properties of GdPtBi were systematically investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Various magnetic configurations were examined, including ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) states, with particular focus on AFM states where the Gd magnetic moments align either parallel (AFM) or perpendicular (AFM) to the [111] crystal direction. For AFM, the in-plane angles were varied at = 0°, 15°, and 30° (denoted as AFM, AFM, and AFM, respectively).

Collective modes in terahertz field response of disordered superconductors.

We consider a problem of nonlinear response to an external electromagnetic radiation in conventional disordered superconductors which contain a small amount of weak magnetic impurities. We focus on the diffusive limit and use Usadel equation to analyze the excitation energy and dispersion relation of the collective modes. We determine the resonant frequency and dispersion of both amplitude (Schmidt-Higgs) and phase (Carlson-Goldman) modes for moderate strength of magnetic scattering.

We realize a Laughlin state of two rapidly rotating fermionic atoms in an optical tweezer. By utilizing a single atom and spin resolved imaging technique, we sample the Laughlin wave function thereby revealing its distinctive features, including a vortex distribution in the relative motion, correlations in the particles' relative angle, and suppression of the interparticle interactions. Our Letter lays the foundation for atom-by-atom assembly of fractional quantum Hall states in rotating atomic gases.

A fundamental manifestation of the nontrivial correlations of an incompressible fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is that an electron added to it disintegrates into more elementary particles, namely fractionally-charged composite fermions (CFs). We show here that the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) density-wave excitation of the ν=n/(2pn±1) FQH states also splits into more elementary single CF excitons. In particular, the GMP graviton, which refers to the recently observed spin-2 neutral excitation in the vanishing wave vector limit [Liang et al.
