We investigate experimentally the parameter space defining, in the visible range, the far-field diffraction properties of a single circular subwavelength aperture surrounded by periodic circular grooves milled on a metallic film. Diffraction patterns emerging from such an antenna are recorded under parallel- and perpendicular-polarized illumination at a given illumination wavelength. By monitoring the directivity and the gain of the antenna with respect to a single aperture, we point out the role played by the near-field surface plasmon excitations. The results can be analyzed through a Huygens-Fresnel model, accounting for the coherent interaction between the field radiated by the hole and the plasmonic field, propagating along the antenna surface and diffracted away in free space.

In contrast to lossy plasmonic metasurfaces (MSs), wideband dielectric MSs comprising subwavelength nanostructures supporting Mie resonances are of great interest in the visible wavelength range. Here, for the first time to our knowledge, we experimentally demonstrate a reflective MS consisting of a square-lattice array of hafnia (HfO) nanopillars to generate a wide color gamut. To design and optimize these MSs, we use a deep-learning algorithm based on a dimensionality reduction technique.

We propose a plasmonic color filter consisting of a single aperture surrounded by concentric periodic corrugations for simultaneous imaging of a spectral range from the visible to the near-infrared. The incident light coupled with surface plasmons propagates through the sub-wavelength aperture as beaming light. The beaming light transmission is able to suppress the spatial color cross-talk between the pixels in an image sensor.

We propose a fiber-optic-plasmonic hybrid device that is based on a corrugation-assisted metal-coated angled fiber facet (CA-MCAFF) for wavelength-dependent off-axis directional beaming (WODB). The device breaks into two key structures: One is the MCAFF structure, which is a modified Kretschmann configuration implemented onto a fiber platform, thereby being able to generate a unidirectional surface plasmon with dramatically enhanced properties in terms of non-confined diffracted radiation loss and operational bandwidth. The other is the periodic corrugation structure put on the MCAFF, thereby enabling WODB functionality out of the whole structures.

A miniature, simplified and planar plasmonic lens based on the circular array of nano-pinholes for on-axis beaming has been proposed and investigated systematically in the visible spectrum. Focusing properties of the designed plasmonic lens illuminated under circular polarized (CP) light for different radius of circular ring, filled with different dielectrics, with different numbers of pinholes have been investigated and analyzed in detail by finite element method (FEM). Our simulated results demonstrate such a miniature single-turn structure can also generate a totally centrosymmetric focusing spot under the CP illumination.
