Purpose: Early confirmation of endotracheal tube placement is of paramount importance to prevent hypoxia and its catastrophic consequences. Despite certain limitations, capnography is considered the gold standard to evaluate the proper placement of an endotracheal tube. Ultrasound is a novel tool with some definitive advantages over capnography. It enables a real-time view and can be performed quickly; furthermore, it is independent of pulmonary blood flow and does not require lung ventilation. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of transtracheal ultrasound in detecting endotracheal intubation.

Source: We completed an extensive search of MEDLINE®, EMBASE™, The Cochrane Library, KoreaMed, LILACS, OpenGrey, and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry from their inception to September 4, 2014. The studies that met the inclusion criteria were pooled and a meta-analysis was conducted.

Principal Findings: Eleven studies and 969 intubations were included in the final analysis. Eight studies and 713 intubations were performed in emergency situations and the others were carried out in elective situations. Transtracheal ultrasonography's pooled sensitivity and specificity with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were 0.98 (95% CI 0.97 to 0.99) and 0.98 (95% CI 0.95 to 0.99), respectively. In emergency scenarios, transtracheal ultrasonography showed an aggregate sensitivity and specificity of 0.98 (95% CI 0.97 to 0.99) and 0.94 (95% CI 0.86 to 0.98), respectively.

Conclusion: Transtracheal ultrasound is a useful tool to confirm endotracheal intubation with an acceptable degree of sensitivity and specificity. It can be used in emergency situations as a preliminary test before final confirmation by capnography.

Background: There is continued research to find new faster, highly accurate, easily accessible, and portable methods of confirming endotracheal tube position during intubation. A newer modality for visualizing endotracheal tube location is transtracheal or transcricothyroid ultrasonography. The aim of this study was to see if ultrasound machine can also be routinely used for the confirmation of endotracheal tube position in operating theaters along with capnograph.

Objective: Acute lung injury (ALI) has become a research hotspot due to its significant public health impact. To explore the value of the use of modified lung ultrasound (MLUS) scoring system for evaluating ALI using a rabbit model of ALI induced by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and investigate its correlation with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and histopathological scores.

Methods: Twenty New Zealand laboratory rabbits were randomly assigned to control group (N = 5) and 3 experimental groups (N = 5 each).

Real-Time Tracheal Ultrasound vs. Capnography for Intubation Confirmation during CPR Wearing a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator in COVID-19 Era.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2024

Biomedical Statistics Center, Data Science Research Institute, Research Institute for Future Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul 06351, Republic of Korea.

This study aimed to compare the accuracy of real-time trans-tracheal ultrasound (TTUS) with capnography to confirm intubation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while wearing a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR). This setting reflects increased caution due to contagious diseases. This single-center, prospective, comparative study enrolled patients requiring CPR while wearing a PAPR who visited the emergency department of a tertiary medical center from December 2020 to August 2022.

The clinical findings of pleural empyema in six horses were retrospectively studied using epidemiological, clinical pathology, microbiological, ultrasound, and post-mortem data. The clinical findings included tachycardia (n = 3/6), tachypnea (n = 6/6), cyanotic mucosa (n = 2/6), hyperthermia (n = 4/6), inspiratory or mixed dyspnea (n = 6/6), presence of fluid and/or pleural rubbing (n = 2/6) and coarse crackling on auscultation (n = 4/6). Horses demonstrated leukocytosis (16.

Congenital high airway obstruction syndrome is a rare malformation whose prognosis is very poor resulting in foetal or perinatal death if no perinatal intervention is performed. However, ultrasound and magnetic resonance enable an accurate prenatal diagnosis and optimal choice of interventional foetal medicine techniques (transtracheal puncture, fetoscopy). These approaches reduce foetal side effects related to the pathological process, and avoid the mother ex utero intrapartal treatment and its deleterious effects.
