Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions to the atmosphere have increased the concentration of this potent neurotoxin in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The magnitude of regional variation in atmospheric Hg pollution levels raises questions about the interactions between natural processes and human activities at local and regional scales that are shaping global atmospheric Hg cycling. Peatlands are potentially valuable and widespread records of past atmospheric Hg levels that could help address these questions.

Purpose: Short-segment minimally invasive percutaneous spinal osteosynthesis has now become one of the treatments of choice to treat thoracolumbar fractures. The question of implant removal once the fracture has healed is still a matter of debate since this procedure can be associated with loss of sagittal correction. Therefore, we analyzed risk factors for kyphosis recurrence after spinal implants removal in patients treated with short-segment minimally invasive percutaneous spinal instrumentation for a thoracolumbar fracture.

A recurring feature of oceanic archipelagos is the presence of adaptive radiations that generate endemic, species-rich clades that can offer outstanding insight into the links between ecology and evolution. Recent developments in evolutionary genomics have contributed towards solving long-standing questions at this interface. Using a comprehensive literature search, we identify studies spanning 19 oceanic archipelagos and 110 putative adaptive radiations, but find that most of these radiations have not yet been investigated from an evolutionary genomics perspective.

How can the transport of fluids in a confined and complex mixed organic/inorganic matrix be far below the expected value from a topological aspect? A good example of this situation is oil shales. Oil and gas shales are source rocks in which organic matter has matured to form hydrocarbons. They exhibit a dual porous network formed by the intertwining of mineral and organic pores that leads to very low permeability.
