Objective. An evaluation of the changes in nitric oxide system by the level of its stable metabolites in the blood serum and their comparison with content of 137Сs in the body of children-residents of radioactively contaminated territories. Materials and methods. The children of school age, the residents of radioactively contaminated territories were examined. The levels of nitrogen compounds (NO2- and NO3-) were determined by the standard method using Grissreagent. 137Сs content was determined in the children body by whole-radioactive body counter. Results. Studies of nitric oxide metabolite content in the blood serum revealed the decrease in nitrite level under an absence of the significant changes in nitrate content and sum of NO metabolites in the children-residents of radioactively contaminated territories. An increase in 137Cs content in the body was accompanied by a decrease of nitrite level in the blood serum of a significant part of children.

Decommissioning of nuclear facilities can be performed in stages. One of the stages and processes in decontamination is the decontamination process before dismantling or facility area recovery activities. Decontamination can be performed using various methods, primarily physical and chemical.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is present in a healthy brain at low densities but can be markedly upregulated by excitatory input and by inflammogens. This study evaluated the sensitivity of the PET radioligand [C]-6-methoxy-2-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)--(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)pyrimidin-4-amine ([C]MC1) to detect COX-2 density in a healthy human brain. The specificity of [C]MC1 was confirmed using lipopolysaccharide-injected rats and transgenic mice expressing the human gene, with 120-min baseline and blocked scans using COX-1 and COX-2 selective agents.

Plant test systems are a sensitive way to detect the genetic effects of various contaminants in environmental compartments: water, soil and sediments. Biotesting of the genotoxicity of soil samples with various activity concentrations of naturally occurring (Ra, Th, K) and artificial (Cs) radionuclides in soil, from the territory of the Aragats Massif (Armenia) was carried out with the application of the micronucleus (Trad-MСN) and stamen hair mutation (Trad-SHM) bioassays of (clone 02) model test-object in the soil - plant system. Undisturbed soil sampling was performed in the southern slopes of the Aragats Massif, from different altitudes (from 1000 to 3200 m above sea level).

The level of radioactive cesium in food that is generally consumed in the rehydrated state can be calculated from measurements taken in the dried state using the specific weight change rate set by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. However, only a few dried foods have a specified weight change rate. Accurate specific weight change rates are critical in determining the compliance of a dried food item with Japanese maximum limits (JMLs) for radioactivity.

Characteristics of Ra-226 particles from legacy contamination and implications for radiological protection.

Radioactive particles are physically discrete sources of radioactivity that have been released into the environment as result of past accidents, incidents, and practices, and can present a hazard to members of the public. The historical use of radium in the luminising of aircraft components, and the subsequent decommissioning of those aircraft and associated waste disposal practices, has left a legacy of contamination, such as the radioactive particles containing Ra-226 at Dalgety Bay, Scotland. The aim of this research was to physically, chemically, and radiologically characterise Ra-226 particles from Dalgety Bay and consider the implications for radiological protection of the public.
