Partly due to delays in its diagnosis, ovarian cancer's prognosis remains dire after primary therapy. Treatment consists in complete cytoreductive surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy. Recurrence rates are disappointingly high, as 60% of women with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer considered in remission will develop recurrent disease within five years. Special attention to undetected peritoneal metastasis and residual tumorous cells during surgery is necessary as they are the main predictors of recurrences. Targeted therapies aim to bring chemotherapy, radiotherapy and selective tumor photosensitizer (PS) agents to the targeted cell and its tumoral microenvironment. Folate receptor α (FRα) shows promising prospects in targeting ovarian cancerous cells. Indeed, with good specificity and frequent overexpression in ovarian cancer, FRα is a recurrent topic in recent publications. The aim of this review is to present FRα and the reasons that make it an ideal targeting ligand for ovarian carcinoma therapy. Prophylactic photodynamic therapy (PPDT) using new generation FRα-coupled agents combined with complete cytoreductive surgery could allow for a significant decrease in recurrence rates. Preclinical trials are being run in order to allow for human clinical applications.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectively kills cancer cells and initiates immune responses that promote anticancer effects locally and systemically. Primarily developed for local and regional cancers, the potential of PDT for systemic antitumor effects [in situ photo-vaccination (ISPV)] remains underexplored. This study investigates: (1) the comparative effectiveness of paclitaxel (PTX) prodrug [Pc-(L-PTX)] for PDT and site-specific PTX effects versus its pseudo-prodrug [Pc-(NCL-PTX)] for PDT combined with checkpoint inhibitors; (2) mechanisms driving systemic antitumor effects; and (3) the prophylactic impact on preventing cancer recurrence.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is demonstrated to be effective in inducing antitumor immune responses for tumor metastasis treatment. However, tumor hypoxia, inferior tissue penetration of light, and low singlet oxygen (O) quantum yield significantly hamper the efficacy of PDT, thus weakening its immune function. Moreover, PDT-mediated neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation can further reduce the therapeutic effectiveness.

Case: We present 2 cases of severe hemodynamic collapse during prophylactic stabilization of impending pathologic humerus fractures using a photodynamic bone stabilization device. Both events occurred when the monomer was infused under pressure into a balloon catheter.
Conclusion: We suspect that an increase in intramedullary pressure during balloon expansion may cause adverse systemic effects similar to fat embolism or bone cement implantation syndrome.

The study aimed to assess the effect and mechanism of safflower injection in preventing retinal vein thrombosis in rabbits. Twenty healthy adult pigmented rabbits were randomly assigned to either the experimental group, receiving safflower injection, or the control group, receiving normal saline. After two weeks of treatment, blood samples were collected to analyze platelet adhesion and aggregation rates.
