Objective: Detecting and measuring changes in longitudinal fundus imaging is key to monitoring disease progression in chronic ophthalmic diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Clinicians assess changes in disease status by either independently reviewing or manually juxtaposing longitudinally acquired color fundus photos (CFPs). Distinguishing variations in image acquisition due to camera orientation, zoom, and exposure from true disease-related changes can be challenging.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the diagnostic value of multiorgan (heart, lungs, blood vessels) point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) in patients with high-risk and medium-to-low-risk pulmonary embolism (PE).

Methods: Clinical data of 92 patients with suspected PE, admitted to Hangzhou TCM Hospital affiliated with Zhejiang Chinese Medical University from July 2021 to June 2023, were retrospectively analyzed. According to hemodynamic status, patients were divided into the high-risk (n=28) and the medium-to-low-risk groups (n=64).

Background: Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI), a subtype of acute mesenteric ischemia, is primarily caused by mesenteric arterial vasoconstriction and decreased vascular resistance, leading to impaired intestinal perfusion.Commonly observed after cardiac surgery, NOMI affects older patients with cardiovascular or systemic diseases, accounting for 20-30% of acute mesenteric ischemia cases with a mortality rate of ∼50%. This review explores NOMI's pathophysiology, clinical implications in aortic dissection, and the unmet needs in diagnosis and management, emphasizing its prognostic significance.

Background: Extreme hemodynamic changes, especially intraoperative hypotension (IOH), are common and often prolonged during Liver Transplant (LT) surgery and during initial hours of recovery. Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) software is one of the tools which can help in proactive hemodynamic management. The accuracy of the advanced hemodynamic parameters such as Cardiac Output (CO) and Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR) obtained from HPI software and prediction performance of the HPI in LT surgery remains unknown.

Patent foramen ovale: A variant of normal or a true congenital heart disease?

Cardiovasc Pathol

January 2025

Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Vascular Sciences and Public Health, University of Padua Medical School, Padova, Italy. Electronic address:

Foramen ovale plays a key role in foetal circulation, however it may remain patent after birth throughout the life. Its patency is so frequent in healthy people (27-35 %), such as to be considered a variant of normal. It is at risk of complications, like paradoxical embolism by right to left shunt with stroke, migraine, temporary blindness, as well as aneurysm, thrombosis and endocarditis of the fossa ovalis.
