Background: There are a myriad of ways patient partners can enact their roles on research teams. International guidelines emphasize the need for a collaborative approach to determining these roles to try to improve research impact and positive patient partner experience. The aims of this review were to: (1) describe how patient partners' roles as co-researchers in health research are determined; and (2) identify factors that influence how these decisions are made.

Language is more than the use of words for pragmatic purposes, and language and thought are intertwined in complex ways. In medical contexts, the relational and dynamic nature of language requires that individuals pay close attention not only to the information communicated but also to how its delivery and reception impact inclusion. Adopting inclusive language principles can play a key role in those in academic medicine living up to the values of equity and inclusion, as they manifest in each of the 5 missions of academic medicine: scientific discovery, education, clinical care, collaboration with communities and partners, and standards of equity, professionalism, and ethics.

The Philippine Universal Health Care (UHC) law enacted in 2019 aimed to address entrenched health system challenges to achieving equitable access to quality health care. This commentary discusses the progress in its implementation to meet its objectives. Some of these health system challenges include overlapping financing roles; weak incentives for integrating health services across local government units (LGUs), the inclusion of the private sector in networks of care, and fragmented primary health care services.
