Dry socket, also known as alveolar osteitis, presents significant challenges in oral surgery because of severe pain and delayed wound healing. This study aims to address these challenges by developing and evaluating a lidocaine-loaded polyelectrolyte complex thermoresponsive gel (LG) designed to enhance wound healing and provide effective pain management in oral wounds. The thermoresponsive gel transitions from a liquid to a gel at body temperature, ensuring sustained contact with the wound site and prolonged release of lidocaine.

Approximately one in five individuals experience alveolar osteitis (AO) following wisdom tooth extraction. AO is characterised by loss of the blood clot from the tooth extraction socket leading to infection and pain, resulting in repeated hospital visits that impose a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Current treatments are sub-optimal; to address this we developed a novel drug-loaded mucoadhesive patch composed of dual electrospun polyvinyl pyrrolidone/Eudragit RS100 (PVP/RS100) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) fibres protected by a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) backing layer.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) therapy is effective for infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) but can induce immunosuppression. In Japan, Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination, modified in 2013 to reduce osteitis/osteomyelitis risk, coincides with the peak onset age of IESS. This raises concerns about infection risks when administering ACTH therapy post-vaccination.

At present, a lack of consensus exists regarding the clinical impact of osteoporosis on alveolar bone metabolism during implant osseointegration. While limited preclinical and clinical evidence demonstrates a negative influence of osteoporosis on dental extraction socket healing, no preclinical studies offer data on the results of implant placement in 6-mo-old, ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague-Dawley rats. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of dental tooth extraction socket healing and implant placement in a rodent model of osteoporosis following daily vehicle (VEH) or abaloparatide (ABL) administration.
