Superantigen-induced (Sag-induced) autoimmunity has been proposed as a mechanism for many human disorders, without a clear understanding of the potential triggers. In this issue of the JCI, McCarthy and colleagues used the SKG mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis to characterize the role of Sag activity in inflammatory arthritis by profiling arthritogenic naive CD4+ T cells. Within the diseased joints, they found a marked enrichment of T cell receptor-variable β (TCR-Vβ) subsets that were reactive to the endogenously encoded mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) Sag.

Background: Adolescents and emerging adults (AEA) with chronic health conditions may face numerous challenges when undergoing the transition from pediatric to adult health care. Despite the need for engagement with AEA in health research, little is known about how researchers operationalize this engagement. In an effort to enhance transparency in the practices of patient engagement, this commentary details the process of developing a pediatric-adult transition-specific youth advisory council in Alberta: the Transition Research Advisory Council (TRAC).

Background: There are a myriad of ways patient partners can enact their roles on research teams. International guidelines emphasize the need for a collaborative approach to determining these roles to try to improve research impact and positive patient partner experience. The aims of this review were to: (1) describe how patient partners' roles as co-researchers in health research are determined; and (2) identify factors that influence how these decisions are made.

The unregulated toxic drug crisis continues to be an urgent health issue in North America. Many families of people who use drugs have been significantly impacted by this issue. In addition to the thousands of North Americans who have been bereaved by drug mortality, many families are providing unpaid care to bridge gaps in services while navigating the grief and stress associated with caring for a loved one amidst a heavily politicized and rapidly changing context.
