Article Abstract

Only four cases of anaphylaxis triggered by polyhexanide have been reported in the literature. We report a case of anaphylaxis in a Danish patient treated with polyhexanide derivate (Prontosan) wound products. We emphasise the importance of intramuscular injection of adrenaline as part of the treatment protocol in the initial phase of anaphylaxis and stress the importance of being aware of polyhexanide as a potential trigger of anaphylaxis.

Purpose: To evaluate whether the effectiveness of topical antiseptic solutions in restoring skin continuity solutions is related to their antimicrobial action or to their action in maintaining moisture, in dogs undergoing elective surgeries.

Methods: Forty dogs, 20 males and 20 females, underwent orchiectomy and oophorectomy, respectively. Thereafter, the animals were allocated into four groups (n = 5) and treated with different topical solutions: polyhexanide 0.

To expand the utilization of gelatin and pectin derived from agricultural by-products, the composite films composed of gelatin, citrus pectin, cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) were prepared through the solvent casting method. Fourier infrared spectroscopy analysis verified the successful integration of CNF and PHMB into the gelatin-pectin matrix. The incorporation of CNF as a reinforcing agent substantially enhanced the barrier capabilities of the composite film.

Proper protection of vascular access after haemodialysis is one of the key measures for the prevention of catheter-related infections. Various substances with bactericidal and anticoagulant properties are used to fill catheters, but due to the unsatisfactory clinical effects and occurrence of adverse reactions, the search for new substances is still ongoing. In the present paper, we compared the in vitro antimicrobial activity of solutions used for tunnelled catheter locking (taurolidine, trisodium citrate) and solutions of substances that could potentially be used for this purpose (sodium bicarbonate, polyhexanide-betaine).
