The authors studied the peripheral microcirculatory blood flow (MCBF) by means of laser Doppler flowmetry in a total of 112 patients presenting with stage IIB-IV lower limb chronic ischaemia (LLCI) on the background of metabolic syndrome (MS). The study was aimed at assessing the state of the peripheral MCBF in LLCI patients on the background of MS. Atherosclerotic lesion of lower-limb vessels on the background of MS is characterised by more pronounced impairments of the functional state of microcirculation in the form of a decrease in the reserve of capillary blood flow during the occlusion test both before and in the early period after revascularization. Patients with LLCI combined with MS were found to have more pronounced alterations in sympathetic regulation and reactivity of the microcirculatory bed in the form of the paradoxical reaction of the blood flow during the breath-holding test.

From spermatogenesis to fertilisation: the role of melatonin on ram spermatozoa.

This review presents recent findings on the effect of melatonin on ram spermatozoa. This hormone regulates seasonal reproduction in the ovine species through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but it also exerts direct effects on spermatogenesis, seminal quality and fertility. In the testis, melatonin stimulates blood flow to this organ, but it also appears to be involved in the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells and the secretion of testosterone through the MT1 and MT2 receptors.

Objectives: The effects of acute physical exercise in patients with resistant hypertension remain largely unexplored compared with hypertensive patients in general. We assessed the short-term effects of acute moderate-intensity (MICE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on the clinic (BP) and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) of patients with resistant hypertension.

Methods: Using a crossover randomized controlled design, 10 participants (56 ± 7 years) with resistant hypertension performed three experimental sessions: MICE, HIIE, and control.

Background: Autologous fat injection in facial reconstruction is a common cosmetic surgery. Although cerebral fat embolism (CFE) as a complication is rare, it carries serious health risks.

Case Summary: We present a case of a 29-year-old female patient who developed acute CFE following facial fat filling surgery.

Cytokinins are plant hormones that regulate cell growth and differentiation. In particular, zeatin (ZTN) delays cellular senescence of human fibroblasts and keratinocytes and exhibits anticancer activity. Chemotherapy-induced anemia is a major side effect of anticancer therapy secondary to premature senescence of red blood cells (RBCs).

When squamous cell carcinoma necessitates mandibular resection, the resultant defect can be complex. An osteocutaneous fibula free flap is an effective reconstruction option, typically supplied by the peroneal artery for both the fibula and skin flap. In this case report, an anatomical variation was found: the skin paddle was supplied by soleus musculocutaneous perforators of the posterior tibial artery, whereas the fibula was supplied by the peroneal artery.
