The complexity in shape context method and its simplification is addressed. A novel, but simple approach to design shape context method including Fourier Transform for the object recognition is described. Relevance of shape context, an important descriptor for the recognition process is detailed. Inclusion of information regarding all the contour points (with respect to a reference point) in computing the distribution is discussed. Role of similarity checking the procedure details regarding the computation of matching errors through the alignment transform are discussed. Present case of shape context (for each point with respect to the centroid) descriptor is testified for its invariance to translation, rotation and scaling operations. Euclidean distance is used during the similarity matching. Modified shape context based descriptor is experimented over three standard databases. The results evidence the relative efficiency of the modified shape context based descriptor than that reported for other descriptor of concurrent interests.

Because educational attainment is associated with well-being in the long term, it is important to understand the developmental processes that enhance academic outcomes during adolescence. Also, although the importance of friends is well documented in adolescence, little is known about how close friends' characteristics work together with youth's own characteristics to shape adolescents' educational trajectories. This study fills an important gap in knowledge by focusing on how middle school students' academic achievement and externalizing problems are associated with their friends' achievement and externalizing problems over time, and how these variables predict educational attainment in adulthood.

Neonatal expertise and technologies have been perfected over the last decades, improving preterm infants' survival rates and allowing a gradual reduction in the gestational age limits of fetal viability. Using the concept of viability as a starting point, we analyze decision-making processes regarding extremely preterm newborns at the limits of viability. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in a public hospital in Barcelona between March and November 2023, we examine the knowledge forms, rationalities and values that healthcare workers employ when guiding families in decisions about infants' viability.

Immigrant experiences of harm in sexual and reproductive healthcare in Spain.

Soc Sci Med

Department of Sociology, Rice University, 6100 Main Street, Houston, TX, 77005, USA. Electronic address:

The medical encounter represents a site where patients may be harmed, with intersecting vulnerabilities shaping the risk and nature of this harm. Sexual and reproductive healthcare is an important site for exploring this dynamic. Questions concerning how immigrant women experience sexual and reproductive healthcare abound, with researchers and practitioners calling for greater attention to a population whose experiences are underrepresented in existing literature.

The European regulatory system for plant protection products-cause of a "Silent Spring" or highly advanced and protective?

Integr Environ Assess Manag

Industrieverband Agrar e. V. (IVA), Wissenschaft und Innovation, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Current publications that are shaping public perception repeatedly claim that residues of plant protection products (PPP) in the environment demonstrate gaps in assessing the exposure and effects of PPP, allegedly revealing the inability of the European regulatory system to prevent environmental contamination and damage such as biodiversity decline. The hypothesis is that environmental risk assessments rely on inappropriate predictive models that underestimate exposure and do not explicitly account for the impact of combinations of environmental stressors and physiological differences in stress responses. This article puts this criticism into context to allow for a more balanced evaluation of the European regulatory system for PPP.
