AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

This study investigated the potential application of a zirconium oxide (ZrO2) ceramic foam culturing system to the production of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). Three sets of ZrO2 ceramic foams with different pore densities of 10, 20, and 30 pores per linear inch (PPI) were prepared to support a 3D culturing system. After primary astrocytes were cultured in these systems, production yields of GDNF were evaluated. The biomaterial biocompatibility, cell proliferation and activation of cellular signaling pathways in GDNF synthesis and secretion in the culturing systems were also assessed and compared with a conventional culturing system. In this study, we found that the ZrO2 ceramic foam culturing system was biocompatible, using which the GDNF yields were elevated and sustained by stimulated cell proliferation and activation of signaling pathways in astrocytes cultured in the system. In conclusion, the ZrO2 ceramic foam is promising for the development of a GDNF mass production device for Parkinson's disease treatment.

Primary Stability of Zirconia Dental Implants with Cylindrical and Tapered Designs Across Varying Bone Densities: An In Vitro Evaluation.

Dent J (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine, Faculdade de Medicina Dentária da Universidade de Lisboa, 1600-277 Lisbon, Portugal.

While titanium implants are widely recognized for their clinical success, zirconia implants have emerged as a metal-free alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of zirconia implant macrogeometry and bone density on primary implant stability. Two types of zirconia implants were tested-the Neodent Zi Ceramic Implant and the Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant, that were placed into polyurethane foam blocks mimicking different bone densities (10 PCF, 15 PCF, 20 PCF, 30 PCF, and 40 PCF).

Self-Reconstructed Amorphous CoO/NiCoB Heterostructure Catalysts for Enhanced HER Performance.

Small

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1295 Dingxi Road, Shanghai, 200050, China.

Amorphous electrocatalysts exhibit potentials as precursors for triggering the in situ reconstruction to generate the real catalytic active species toward electrochemical processes. In this work, a new kind of amorphous Ni-Co-B alloy pre-catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is reported, which is obtained via a facile electroless plating strategy on the nickel foam (NF). Interestingly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and morphological characterizations identify the in situ reconstruction process during HER accompanied by the preferential leaching of surface B species and the formation of amorphous CoO nanosheet arrays as the real active sites.

Within the context of circular economy and industrial ecology, adsorption offers an effective manner for recycling resources from wastewater, but controllable desorption remains a challenge. Inspired by metal-thiol binding and reversible thiol-disulfide redox transformation in biological systems, this study reports the development of a reversible adsorption/desorption (RAD) system for controllable recovery of copper based on electrochemically switchable sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN). Density functional theory calculations offered theoretical prediction for the formation of S-Cu bonds and reversible weak interaction between S-S bonds and Cu.

This study introduces the first fabrication of porous titanium/hydroxyapatite interpenetrating phase composites through an innovative processing method. The approach combines additive manufacturing of a customized titanium skeleton with the infiltration of an injectable hydroxyapatite foam, followed by in situ foam hardening at physiological temperature. This biomimetic process circumvents ceramic sintering and metal casting, effectively avoiding the formation of secondary phases that can impair mechanical performance.
