AI Article Synopsis

  • Researchers synthesized a library of 10 stable Ni(II) σ-complexes as precatalysts for cross-coupling reactions.
  • The complex effectively couples 2-methoxyphenyl dimethylsulfamate with a specific boronate ester in dry THF at room temperature, completing the reaction in under 60 minutes.
  • Altering the water content in the potassium phosphite (K3PO4) and the THF solvent can increase the reaction time by up to three times.

Article Abstract

A library containing 10 air-stable Ni(II)X(Aryl)(PCy3)2 σ-complexes as precatalysts (X = Cl, Br, OTs, OMs, aryl = 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl; X = Cl, 1-acenaphthenyl, 1-(2-methoxynaphthyl), 9-phenanthrenyl, 9-anthracyl) was synthesized and demonstrated to quantitatively cross-couple 2-methoxyphenyl dimethylsulfamate with methyl 4-(5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborinane-2-yl)benzoate at 23 °C in dry THF in the presence of K3PO4(H2O)3.2 in less than 60 min. Lower or higher amounts of H2O in K3PO4 and as received THF mediate the same transformation in a maximum three times longer reaction time.

We report herein the synthesis of an unprecedented isomer of perylene, dicyclohepta[cd,fg]-as-indacene bearing two phenyl groups (1-Ph) by the nickel-mediated intramolecular homocoupling of a 4,4'-biazulene derivative (2). The X-ray crystallographic analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that 1-Ph adopts a unique helically twisted geometry although the local aromaticity of azulene moieties was preserved. The double covalent linkage of the two azulene skeletons imparts significant orbital interaction, which affords near-infrared (NIR) absorption (up to 1720 nm) and remarkable redox behaviors despite its closed-shell electronic structure.

Nickel bis(dithiolene) complexes are promising candidates for novel n-type semiconductors, which are air-stable and highly conductive. A key issue for further development is that their synthesis often yields undesired products, greatly limiting the degree of polymerization as well as purity and adversely affecting their electronic properties. Crucially, there is a lack of in-depth identification of these species and understanding of the reaction mechanism.

Herein, we present the first efficient and sustainable multicomponent synthesis (MCS) of 2-pyrazolines using acceptorless dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohols catalysed by nickel(II) catalysts. Two air-stable phosphine free nickel(II) complexes anchored by NNN-type pincer ligands were synthesized and efficiently used in the MCS of 40 distinct pyrazoline derivatives.

The electrochemical oxidation of anodic metals (M = nickel and palladium) in an acetonitrile solution of the thiosemicarbazone ligands ()-2-(1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylidene)-N-methylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (a), ()-2-(1-(p-tolyl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (b), and ()-N-phenyl-2-(1-(p-tolyl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (c) yielded the homoleptic complexes [ML], , , , and and [ML], as air-stable solids. The crystal structures for , , , and show the ligands in a transoid disposition with the [S,S] and [N,N] donor atom pairs occupying positions on the nearly square planar coordination plane of the metal. The structure for of S4 symmetry comprises a tetranuclear palladacycle where the metalated ligands are arranged around a central PdS environment: a crown ring with alternating palladium and sulfur atoms.

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (eHER) is crucial in addressing the growing global energy demand. Although nickel-pincer-based molecular complexes, varying in donor atoms, were studied previously for eHER, the impact of variations in the substituents attached to the donor atoms was not investigated. Herein, three air-stable PNP-based Ni-pincer complexes [R1=R2=Ph (7); R1=R2=Bu (9); R1=Bu, R2=Ph (10)], varying solely in P-substituents, were studied in acetonitrile.
