Background: Recently introduced hematology analyzer, the Sysmex XN modular system (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan), has newly adopted a florescent channel to detect platelets and immature platelet fraction (IPF). This study aimed to establish new reference intervals for %-IPF and absolute number of IPF (A-IPF) on Sysmex XN. Platelet counts, %-IPF, and A-IPF were also compared between Sysmex XN and XE-2100 systems (Sysmex).

Methods: Except outliers, blood samples from 2104 healthy individuals and 140 umbilical cord blood were analyzed using both Sysmex XN and XE-2100. The results of two systems were compared using Bland-Altman plot. The reference intervals for %-IPF and A-IPF were defined using non-parametric percentile methods according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute guideline (C28-A3).

Results: The platelet counts, %-IPF, and A-IPF showed non-parametric distributions. The mean difference between Sysmex XN and XE-2100 in healthy individuals revealed a positive bias in platelets (+8.0×109/L), %-IPF (+1.2%), and A-IPF (+3.0×109/L). The reference intervals for %-IPF and A-IPF on Sysmex XN were: 1.0%-7.3% and 2.49-15.64×109/L in healthy individuals; and 1.0%-4.4% and 2.94-12.82×109/L in umbilical cord blood.

Conclusions: This large-scale study demonstrates a clear difference of platelet counts and IPF between Sysmex XN and XE-2100. The new reference intervals for IPF on Sysmex XN would provide fundamental data for clinical practice and future research.

Introduction: Immature platelets or reticulated platelets are newly released thrombocytes. They can be identified by their large size and high RNA cytoplasm concentration. Immature platelet fraction (IPF) represents the percentage of immature circulative platelets relative to the total number of platelets.

Background: Appropriate usage of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) suppresses human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication. One of such HAART is dolutegravir (DTG) containing regimen which Nigeria included in her national protocol, as the preferred first-line option, with particularly fixed dose combination of tenofovir/lamivudine/dolutegravir (TLD) in 2018.

Aim: To access the impact of this regimen as against other regimens on some hematological parameters as well as cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) count and viral load on people living with HIV infection.

The complete blood count (CBC) is a highly requested test that is generally restricted to centralized laboratories, which are limited by high cost, being maintenance-demanding, and requiring costly equipment. The Hilab System (HS) is a small, handheld hematological platform that uses microscopy and chromatography techniques, combined with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), to perform a CBC test. This platform uses ML and AI techniques to add higher accuracy and reliability to the results besides allowing for faster reporting.

Febrile neutropenia secondary to chemotherapy is one of the most critical complications in cancer treatment. The aim of this study was to determine if an increase in the percentage of immature platelet fraction (IPF%) might predict early neutrophil recovery following cytostatic-dependent aplasia. A retrospective cohort study compared serial complete blood counts and the level of C-reactive protein (CRP) following induction chemotherapy for Ewing sarcoma and Non-Ewing sarcoma patients.

Establishment of Review Criteria Coordinating With the Automated Digital Cell Morphology Identification System in a Specialized Women's and Children's Hospital.

Lab Med

May 2023

Department of Laboratory Medicine, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, People's Republic of China, Key Laboratory of Birth Defects and Related Diseases of Women and Children (Sichuan University), Ministry of Education, Chengdu, People's Republic of China.

Objective: We aimed to establish appropriate review criteria for blood cell analysis in a specialized women's and children's hospital. Also, the CellaVision DI-60, was developed as one of the automated digital cell morphology analyzer, we evaluated if it was shown to be most effective under the certain review criteria.

Methods: A total of 2890 blood samples were detected to optimize the previously established review criteria for women and children with the Sysmex XE-2100.
