In bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) at least one electrode reaction is catalyzed by microorganisms or isolated enzymes. One of the existing challenges for BESs is shifting the technology towards industrial use and engineering reactor systems at adequate scales. Due to the fact that most BESs are usually deployed in the production of large-volume but low-value products (e.g., energy, fuels, and bulk chemicals), investment and operating costs must be minimized. Recent advances in reactor concepts for different BESs, in particular biofuel cells and electrosynthesis, are summarized in this review including electrode development and first applications on a technical scale. A better understanding of the impact of reactor components on the performance of the reaction system is an important step towards commercialization of BESs.

Continuous-Flow and Scalable Synthesis of Pd@Pt Core-Shell Nanocrystals with Enhanced Activity toward Oxygen Reduction.

We report a scalable method based on continuous-flow reactors for conformally coating the surfaces of facet-controlled Pd nanocrystals with uniform, ultrathin shells made of Pt. The key to the success of such an approach is the identification of a proper polyol to generate the Pt atoms at a relatively slow rate to ensure adequate surface diffusion and thus the formation of uniform shells in a layer-by-layer fashion. We first demonstrate the concept using the production of Pd@Pt (n = 2-5) core-shell icosahedral nanocrystals and then have the strategy successfully extended to the syntheses of Pd@Pt cubic and octahedral nanocrystals.

Cell-Free Gene Expression: Methods and Applications.

Chem Rev

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois 60208, United States.

Cell-free gene expression (CFE) systems empower synthetic biologists to build biological molecules and processes outside of living intact cells. The foundational principle is that precise, complex biomolecular transformations can be conducted in purified enzyme or crude cell lysate systems. This concept circumvents mechanisms that have evolved to facilitate species survival, bypasses limitations on molecular transport across the cell wall, and provides a significant departure from traditional, cell-based processes that rely on microscopic cellular "reactors.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO reduction using a photocathode is an attractive method for making valuable chemical products due to its simplicity and lower overpotential requirements. However, previous PEC processes have often been diffusion-limited leading to low production rates of the CO reduction reaction, due to inefficient gas diffusion through the liquid electrolyte to the catalyst surface, particularly at high current densities. In this study, a gas-permeable photocathode in a continuous flow PEC reactor is incorporated, which facilitates the direct supply of CO gas to the photocathode-electrolyte interface, unlike dark reaction-based flow reactors.

Online Monitoring of Catalytic Processes by Fiber-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

Savannah River National Laboratory, 301 Gateway Drive, Aiken, SC 29803, USA.

An innovative solution for real-time monitoring of reactions within confined spaces, optimized for Raman spectroscopy applications, is presented. This approach involves the utilization of a hollow-core waveguide configured as a compact flow cell, serving both as a conduit for Raman excitation and scattering and seamlessly integrating into the effluent stream of a cracking catalytic reactor. The analytical technique, encompassing device and optical design, ensures robustness, compactness, and cost-effectiveness for implementation into process facilities.
