Background: Most patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) develop recurrence. No previous studies have investigated predictors of local-only recurrence following PD for PDAC. Our study aimed to determine timing, pattern and predictors of any-site and local-only recurrence following PD for PDAC.

Cre-Lox miRNA-delivery technology optimized for inducible microRNA and gene-silencing studies in zebrafish.

Nucleic Acids Res

January 2025

Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics, School of Environment and Science, Griffith University, 46 Don Young Road, Brisbane QLD 4111, Australia., Brisbane, QLD 4111, Australia.

While many genetic tools exist for zebrafish, this animal model still lacks robust gene-silencing and microRNA-delivery technologies enabling spatio-temporal control and traceability. We have recently demonstrated that engineered pri-miR backbones can trigger stable gene knockdown and/or express microRNA(s) of choice in this organism. However, this miRNA-expressing technology presents important limitations.

KPRR: a novel machine learning approach for effectively capturing nonadditive effects in genomic prediction.

Brief Bioinform

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, Institute of Animal Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yuanmingyuan West Road, Beijing, 100193, China.

Nonadditive genetic effects pose significant challenges to traditional genomic selection methods for quantitative traits. Machine learning approaches, particularly kernel-based methods, offer promising solutions to overcome these limitations. In this study, we developed a novel machine learning method, KPRR, which integrated a polynomial kernel into ridge regression to effectively capture nonadditive genetic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • - Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle diverged over 150,000 years ago, leading to significant genomic differences and complex genetic mixing in African and Southern European cattle populations over the millennia.
  • - Using software tools MOSAIC and ELAI, researchers analyzed the ancestry of hybrid African and Southern European cattle and found common genomic regions indicating retained or introgressed ancestry from various lineages, demonstrating the effectiveness of both methodologies.
  • - The study highlighted that certain genomic regions relate to important biological functions, particularly in diseases like bovine tuberculosis and trypanosomiasis, showing how retained African taurine ancestry may help cattle manage severe anaemia, improving livestock resilience in sub-Saharan Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitrous oxide (NO) is a major greenhouse gas contributing to the healthcare sector's carbon footprint, with pre-utilisation losses of up to 95%, which can potentially be minimized by decommissioning NO manifolds.
  • A study involving 18 hospitals in Greater London collected data on NO utilization over five days, revealing that only 18% of procured NO was utilized, leading to estimated pre-utilisation losses of over 5 million liters.
  • The results indicated strong support among anaesthetists for decommissioning manifolds, highlighting both environmental and economic advantages in improving NO management.
