In order to assess whether the concentration of high density lipoproteins (HDLs) changes in leishmaniotic dogs before and after treatment, HDL cholesterol (HDL-Chol and HDL%), C reactive protein (CRP) and activity of the antioxidant enzyme paraoxonase (PON-1) were measured in sera from 10 controls and 10 leishmaniotic dogs. Seven of these latter were sampled also 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after treatment with antimonials and allopurinol. HDL-chol, and PON-1 were low in leishmaniotic dogs at admission and increased after treatment. HDL-chol and HDL% correlated positively with PON-1 and negatively with CRP suggesting that HDLs decrease through an oxidative mechanism. Therefore, HDLs may be used to monitor the magnitude of oxidation associated with inflammation in leishmaniotic dogs.

This prospective, randomized, controlled, therapeutic study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a product containing nucleotides and lactoferrin in maintaining or improving the clinical picture and laboratory findings of canine leishmaniosis (CanL). The safety and tolerance of this combination were also assessed. This is the first study showing an in vivo microautophagy upregulation by Leishmania infantum in dogs. Both Leishmania amastigotes and promastigotes were detected in the cytoplasm of many professional and nonprofessional phagocytic cells of popliteal lymph node of three dogs suffering from chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Ultrastructurally, parasites appeared to be wrapped by lysosomes and/or multivesicular bodies.

Current knowledge on the role of exosomal microRNA (miRNA) in canine leishmaniasis (CL), with particular regards to the interaction between miR-122 and lipid alterations, is limited. The aim of this study was to isolate/characterize exosomes in canine serum and evaluate the expression of miR-122 in ten healthy and ten leishmaniotic dogs. Serum exosomes were isolated using a polymer-based kit, ExoQuick and characterized by flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy, whereas miR-122-5p expression was evaluated by quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.
