Article Synopsis
  • - Thymomas are rare and malignant tumors of the thymus gland, with isolated metastasis to the liver being extremely uncommon.
  • - An 89-year-old man presented with urinary retention, leading to imaging that revealed a mass near the aortopulmonary window and a lesion in the liver, ultimately diagnosed as metastatic type B2 thymoma.
  • - This case highlights the challenges in identifying metastatic thymoma; any mediastinal mass should prompt evaluation for possible metastasis, especially in older patients.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms associated with the characteristic gene fusion. They frequently occur in extra-thoracic sites and are not uncommon in the head and neck (HN) region. Myxoid SFT is a rare morphological subtype of SFT, the features of which overlap with those of other myxoid-appearing tumors, making the diagnosis challenging.

Article Synopsis
  • Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are unique soft tissue tumors linked to genetic rearrangements and characterized by specific vessel formations; they can show rare variants, including the malignant epithelioid cell variant.
  • The study presented three cases of epithelioid SFTs in elderly patients, mostly female, located in different extrathoracic areas, with malignancy diagnosed in two cases based on tumor cell markers.
  • The findings highlight the need for heightened awareness and careful differential diagnosis of epithelioid SFTs due to their atypical cell arrangements, which can confuse pathologists and complicate diagnosis compared to more common tumors.

Solitary Fibrous Tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal tumors of fibroblastic/myofibroblastic origin that stem from various anatomical sites. Most SFTs are asymptomatic and noticed incidentally by various imaging modalities. Although SFTs were initially identified in the pleura and erroneously considered to originate solely from serosal layers, extrapleural SFTs have been reported more commonly than their pleural counterparts.

Mixed invasive mucinous and non-mucinous adenocarcinoma is a rare variant of lung adenocarcinoma. In pure invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma, multilobar and bilateral involvement are common, and extrathoracic metastasis is rare. Here, we report a case of mixed invasive mucinous and non-mucinous adenocarcinoma with distant metastasis to multiple organs without marked enlargement of the primary lung lesion.
