Optical trapping and ions combine unique advantages of independently striving fields of research. Light fields can form versatile potential landscapes, such as optical lattices, for neutral and charged atoms, while avoiding detrimental implications of established radiofrequency traps. Ions interact via long-range Coulomb forces and permit control and detection of their motional and electronic states on the quantum level. Here we show optical trapping of (138)Ba(+) ions in the absence of radio-frequency fields via a far-detuned dipole trap, suppressing photon scattering by three orders of magnitude and the related recoil heating by four orders of magnitude. To enhance the prospects for optical as well as hybrid traps, we demonstrate a method for stray electric field compensation to a level below 9 mV m(-1). Our results will be relevant, for example, for ion-atom ensembles, to enable 4-5 orders of magnitude lower common temperatures, accessing the regime of ultracold interaction and chemistry, where quantum effects are predicted to dominate.

Full-length hepatitis B virus (HBV) transcripts of chimpanzees and patients treated with multidose (MD) HBV siRNA ARC-520 and entecavir (ETV) were characterized by single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing, identifying multiple types of transcripts with the potential to encode HBx, HBsAg, HBeAg, core, and polymerase, as well as transcripts likely to be derived from dimers of dslDNA, and these differed between HBeAg-positive (HBeAg+) and HBeAg-negative (HBeAg-) individuals. HBV transcripts from the last follow-up ~30 months post-ARC-520 treatment were categorized from one HBeAg+ (one of two previously highly viremic patients that became HBeAg- upon treatment and had greatly reduced cccDNA products) and four HBeAg- patients. The previously HBeAg+ patient received a biopsy that revealed that he had 3.

The increasingly widespread application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) in clinical diagnostics and epidemiological research has generated a demand for robust, fast, automated, and user-friendly bioinformatics workflows. To guide the choice of tools for the assembly of full-length viral genomes from NGS datasets, we assessed the performance and applicability of four open-source bioinformatics pipelines (shiver-for which we created a user-friendly Dockerized version, referred to as dshiver; SmaltAlign; viral-ngs; and V-pipe) using both simulated and real-world HIV-1 paired-end short-read datasets and default settings. All four pipelines produced consensus genome assemblies with high quality metrics (genome fraction recovery, mismatch and indel rates, variant calling F1 scores) when the reference sequence used for assembly had high similarity to the analyzed sample.

Stochastic Filtering of the Attitude Quaternion.

Sensors (Basel)

Several stochastic H∞ filters for estimating the attitude of a rigid body from line-of-sight measurements and rate gyro readings are developed. The measurements are corrupted by white noise with unknown variances. Our approach consists of estimating the quaternion while attenuating the transmission gain from the unknown variances and initial errors to the current estimation error.

In orchard environments, negative obstacles such as ditches and potholes pose significant safety risks to robots working within them. This paper proposes a negative obstacle detection method based on LiDAR tilt mounting. With the LiDAR tilted at 40°, the blind spot is reduced from 3 m to 0.

The main purpose of this study is to prepare a melamine aniline formaldehyde foam, an MAF copolymer, with lower water sensitivity and non-flammability properties obtained by the condensation reaction of melamine, aniline, and formaldehyde. In addition, the preparation of MAFF composites with organoclay reinforcement was determined as a secondary target in order to obtain better mechanical strength, heat, and sound insulation properties. For the synthesis of foams, the microwave irradiation technique, which offers advantages such as faster reactions, high yields and purities, and reduced curing times, was used together with the heating technique and the effect of organoclay content on the structural and textural properties of foams and both heat insulation and mechanical stability was investigated.
