Background: A rat model for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) was established to observe the effect of ischemic postconditioning (IPostC) on cerebral edema and the AQP4 expression following HIBD and to verify the neuroprotection of IPostC and the relationship between changes of AQP4 expression and cerebral edema.
Methods: Water content was measured with dry-wet method, and AQP4 transcription and the protein expression of the lesions were detected with real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry staining, respectively.
Results: Within 6-48 hours, the degree of ipsilateral cerebral edema was significantly lower in IPostC-15 s/15 s group than in HIBD group. Similar to the HIBD group, the AQP4 transcription and expression in the IPostC group showed a downward and then upward trend. But the expression was still more evident in the HIBD group than in the IPostC-15 s/15 s group. From 24 to 48 hours, IPostC-15 s/15 s decreased the slowing down expression of AQP4.
Conclusion: IPostC has neuroprotective effect on neonatal rats with HIBD and it may relieve cerebral edema by regulating the expression of AQP4.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinical manifestation of various underlying causes, characterized by the combination of clinical and imaging findings associated with the posterior cerebral areas and relating to arterial hypertension and endothelial dysfunction. No association was made so far between PRES and McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), a rare genetic disorder resulting in fibrous dysplasia. A 33-year-old female with MAS was presented to the emergency department of the 417 Army Share Fund Hospital in Athens (Greece) after seizure activity with two episodes of ocular upward deviation and transient facial palsy, each lasting a few minutes, followed by a postictal phase.

Hemodynamic measurements such as cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) can provide useful information for the diagnosis and characterization of brain tumors. Previous work showed that arterial spin labeling (ASL) in combination with vasoactive stimulation enabled simultaneous non-invasive evaluation of both parameters, however this approach had not been previously tested in tumors. The aim of this work was to investigate the application of this technique, using a pseudo-continuous ASL (PCASL) sequence combined with breath-holding at 3 T, to measure CBF and CVR in high-grade gliomas and metastatic lesions, and to explore differences across tumoral-peritumoral regions and tumor types.

Methionine sulfoximine (MSO) is a compound originally discovered as a byproduct of agene-based milled flour maturation. MSO irreversibly inhibits the astrocytic enzyme glutamine synthase (GS) but also interferes with the transport of glutamine (Gln) and of glutamate (Glu), and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesized within the Glu/Gln-GABA cycle, in this way dysregulating neurotransmission balance in favor of excitation. No wonder that intraperitoneal administration of MSO has long been known to induce behavioral and/or electrographic seizures.

Futile recanalization hampers prognoses for ischemic stroke patients despite successful recanalization therapy. Allegedly, hypertension and reperfusion deficits contribute, but a better understanding is needed of how they interact and mediate disease outcome. We reassessed data from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (male, n = 6-7/group) that were subjected to two-hour embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion and thrombolysis in preclinical trials.

Background: Diffuse hemispheric glioma, histone 3 (H3) G34-mutant, has been newly defined in the 2021 WHO classification of central nervous system tumors. Here we sought to define the prognostic roles of clinical, neuroimaging, pathological, and molecular features of these tumors.
Methods: We retrospectively assembled a cohort of 114 patients (median age 22 years) with diffuse hemispheric glioma, H3 G34-mutant, CNS WHO grade 4 and profiled the imaging, histological and molecular landscape of their tumors.
