Octadecyl-bonded silica, commonly used for reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography, was modified using surfactants bearing ionizable groups and the modified packing used in ion-exchange chromatography of proteins. The surfactants 2-(n-hexadecylheptaethoxy)acetic acid, 1-(n-hexadecyloctaethoxy)ethylene-diamine, and N-(n-hexadecyloctaethoxy)pyridinium were adsorbed onto test columns packed with octadecyl-bonded silica particles. The proteins lysozyme, bovine serum albumin, trypsin, horse serum cholinesterase, and bovine liver carboxylesterase were used to study the ion-exchange characteristics of the modified packings. The retention order of the proteins on the surfactant-modified stationary phases were as predicted by the isoelectric point of each protein. In addition, the interaction of enzymes with the packings did not result in significant loss of enzymatic activity. Surfactant removal was possible with the use of organic solvents and this allowed the octadecyl-bonded surface to be used again in the reverse-phase mode. During the course of the experiments, no degradation in the packing's performance was observed due to loss of adsorbed surfactant, even after over 85,000 column volumes of sodium chloride and Tris-HCl buffers were circulated through the column.

In a market environment where food safety problems still occur despite repeated prohibitions, food safety problems caused by veterinary drug residues and biological safety problems caused by the transfer of drug resistance have attracted much attention. Herein, a method based on a compound purification system coupled with direct analysis in real time-tandem mass spectrometry (DART-MS/MS) was established to determine 41 different types of veterinary drug residues in livestock and poultry products. First, a single-standard solution sampling method was used to optimize the selection of the best quasi-molecular ion, two daughter ions, and their cone-hole and collision voltages; qualitative and quantitative ion pairs are composed of a quasi-molecular ion and its corresponding daughter ion.

Molecular level understanding of the chemistry at the aqueous/hydrophobe interface is crucial to separation processes in aqueous media, such as reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Despite significant advances in our knowledge of the solute retention mechanism in these reversed-phase systems, direct observation of the behavior of molecules and ions at the interface in reversed-phase systems still remains a major challenge and experimental probing techniques that provide the spatial information of the distribution of molecules and ions are required. This review addresses surface-bubble-modulated liquid chromatography (SBMLC), which has a stationary gas phase in a column packed with hydrophobic porous materials and enables one to observe the molecular distribution in the heterogeneous reversed-phase systems consisting of the bulk liquid phase, the interfacial liquid layer, and the hydrophobic materials.

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) and tetrodotoxins (TTXs) are powerful neurotoxins. Previous research reported that PSTs and TTXs are found together in seafoods and may pose a serious hazard to public health. In this work, a lab-made and affordable high-throughput pipette tip microextraction strategy is presented. In this approach, a magnetic sorbent is quickly dispersed in the sample by means of a disperser solvent and the resulting dispersion is immediately aspirated into a pipette tip containing a small neodymium magnet inside, which entraps the magnetic sorbent containing the analytes. The sample is then discarded, and the subsequent cleaning and desorption steps are conducted by aspirating/dispensing the suitable solvents.
