Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies suggest that esketamine may have neuroprotective effects after traumatic brain injury (TBI), although its specific benefits were previously unclear.
  • In an experiment using mice with controlled cortical impact injury, esketamine was administered post-injury, revealing that a dosage of 4 mg/kg effectively reduced brain edema and neurological deficits compared to higher doses.
  • The research also found that esketamine enhances autophagy processes in neural cells and activates key pathways (AMPK/mTOR) that contribute to its protective effects against oxidative stress and neuronal damage after TBI.

Effect of Cryptorchidism on the Histomorphometry, Proliferation, Apoptosis, and Autophagy in Boar Testes.

Animals (Basel)

May 2021

Institute of Animal Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Shanxi Agricultural University, Taigu, Jinzhong 030801, China.

Spontaneous unilateral cryptorchid boars have one testis in the abdomen or inguinal canal, causing its temperature to be at or near the body temperature, which impairs spermatogenesis, although the histomorphometry and molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to determine the histomorphometry, proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy alterations in spermatogonia and Sertoli cells in unilateral cryptorchid, scrotal (contrascrotal), and preweaning piglet (preweaning) testes. Histomorphometrical analysis of cryptorchid testes showed that the seminiferous tubules contained only Sertoli cells and a few spermatogonia, but did not contain post-meiotic germ cells.

The adverse environmental conditions found in the periodontium during periodontitis pathogenesis stimulate local autophagy responses, mainly due to a continuous inflammatory response against the dysbiotic subgingival microbiome. The junctional epithelium represents the main site of the initial interaction between the host and the dysbiotic biofilm. Here, we investigated the role of autophagy in junctional epithelium keratinocytes (JEKs) in response to or its purified lipopolysaccharides (LPS).

Leptomycin B inhibits the proliferation, migration, and invasion of cultured gastric carcinoma cells.

Biosci Biotechnol Biochem

February 2020

Department of General Surgery, Institute of Micro-Invasive Surgery of Zhejiang University, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Medical College of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Chromosome region maintenance 1 (CRM1) plays a critical role in tumorigenesis and progression through modulating nuclear export of several proteins. However, the precise effects of CRM1 inhibitor on gastric carcinoma have not yet been illustrated. Here, we investigated the potential anti-cancer activities of leptomycin B, the most potent CRM1 antagonist, on cultured gastric carcinoma cells.

Measurements of Cell Death Induced by Snake and Spider's Venoms and Derived Toxins.

Methods Mol Biol

December 2020

Faculty of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Institute for Drug Research, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Snake and spider envenomation have a considerable impact on public health. Their pathology is induced by a variety of toxins composing the venom which induce cytotoxicity to cells of different organs by several cell death pathways. Described in this chapter are methods in vitro used to assess venoms and toxin-induced cell death using mammalian cell cultures.
