Published: November 2014

Purpose: To describe a case of massive suprachoroidal hemorrhage after a phacoemulsification managed with pars plana vitrectomy, heavy silicone oil (Densiron), and supine position.

Methods: Report of a 69-year-old woman with systemic hypertension and under antiplatelet treatment who developed a massive suprachoroidal hemorrhage.

Results: The patient underwent a pars plana vitrectomy and heavy oil endotamponade combined with 3 radial sclerotomies to drain the suprachoroidal blood. Two months after this surgery, the retina remains attached and visual acuity is 3/60 with aphakia and half of the vitreous cavity filled with Densiron.

Conclusion: Pars plana vitrectomy and Densiron endotamponade with supine position can represent a good surgical option in such a dramatic case as a suprachoroidal hemorrhage. Long-term heavy silicone oil endotamponade cannot be advised in these cases.

Purpose: To evaluate outcomes of ultracomplex retinal detachment (UCRD) repairs performed at a large county hospital.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients who underwent a UCRD repair, defined as a funnel retinal detachment (RD), RD associated with ocular trauma, or RD requiring retinectomy, 5000 centistoke silicone oil or perfluorocarbon heavy liquid (PFO). The outcomes examined were visual acuity (VA), anatomic success, and phthisis development.

High-Performance Silicone Sponge Evaporators with Low Thermal Conductivity for Long-Term Solar Interfacial Evaporation and Freshwater Harvesting.

Langmuir

December 2024

Research Center of Resource Chemistry and Energy Materials, and State Key Laboratory for Oxo Synthesis and Selective Oxidation, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 730000 Lanzhou, P. R. China.

Solar interfacial evaporation (SIE) has emerged as a highly promising approach for sustainable freshwater harvesting. However, maintaining a stable evaporation rate and achieving a high freshwater yield in high-salinity brines remain a significant challenge. In this study, we present the development of silicone sponge-based evaporators with a "free-salt" structure, designed to enhance the efficiency of SIE and freshwater collection.

The number of patients requiring breast reconstruction with artificial implants has been increasing, and so is the use of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT). Consequently, a growing number of patients with artificial breast implants are expected to undergo CIRT. Because artificial breasts are composed of a silicone polymer gel with a silicon-oxygen backbone, which differs significantly from human tissues, the stopping power ratio for carbon beams cannot be accurately converted from CT values using standard CT-to-stopping power ratio tables (CT-SP tables).

Article Synopsis
  • Silicone oil (SO) is commonly used as a vitreous tamponade, but it has known complications, including glaucoma and cataracts, along with increasing cases of unexplained visual loss after SO removal.
  • A literature review highlights the chemical properties of SO, its surgical complications, and issues like SO migration and proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
  • Doctors must weigh the severity of retinal diseases and their own experience when choosing SO, while the search for safer vitreous substitutes remains critical.
